As comparison, back in SQ's golden days it was $50 for non-operational IFE in economy class.
Why should SQ pay compensation at all? The meal was available and your mum declined it (for some very funny reasons IMHO).

The timing was not optimal and yes there was a service oversight. An apology would have been more than enough and 75$ is a very generous gesture of goodwill.

      +1.

I'd be hard pressed to identify another airline that would offer anything more than an apology for the oversight.

If anything, I find SQ to be generally proactive with service recovery. Case in point: when the IFE rebooted three times on my SIN-LHR flight last year, I saw the IFS busy scribbling away in the corner. Turns out, he was giving everybody in J $150 in vouchers as a goodwill measure -- the equivalent of a dozen movie tickets in Singapore

It was for me. Iam not complaining about SQ that loudly anymore. And in BKK I make sure that I go to the SKL instead of going to the crowded (and lousy) TG lounges.

Went for a trip to Japan on Economy recently.

          SQ638 SIN-NRT
Was a 2355 flight, seated all the row at second last row, chief steward came over to say hi, and also during the refreshment meal (supper), a stewardess was assigned to me to take my order first, ahead of everyone else. Thought that was really cool.

          SQ631 HND-SIN
Checked in at business class counter, and was personally escorted by a ground staff to clear baggage screening. During the flight, nobody came to say hi to me, but during one of the toilet trips, the leading steward said hi when i bumped into him at the alley. He said he wanted to say hi earlier but i was busy (sleeping?) so he didn't get the chance to do that. For meal selection, I didn't get to choose first, but I reckon that being seated in row 33, there probably wasn't any high risk that I wouldn't get my choice of food.

My overall impression - SQ really does care about the PPS product and its customers. Some of the execution could be more refined though but I'm not complaining.

Happy for you but for me it's absolutely crew and pax load dependent based on my experiences so I take the good with the bad with the indifferent.

SQ HND to SIN in First Class: 3 PPS and 3 Kyo-Keiseki meals. I was told that I cannot have a Japanese meal (being PPS) as other passengers had already selected them and I had a BTC request. Highlighted to the IFS that I still would like to be asked first and not last and also made a point that BTC is loaded on top and not as a replacement for the standard meals. IFS went through the trouble of rearranging meals and I received my Japanese meal.

Although this is true in the past, I don't think it's true anymore.

7 pax, 2 with BTC: 3 Japanese meals plus all regular main dishes (plus 2 BTC)

I asked the IFS to confirm that standard loading was different without the 2 BTC and he was not able to do so.

My experience was this: I ordered BTC Kyo Kaiseki, as did my partner. We wanted the caviar on top of that. Crew told me that because we BTC'd the Kyo Kaiseki, they didn't load the western appetiser for us. I think these days due to cost cutting they don't load extras.

(In the end we got our caviar cos four of the pax were vegetarian. They also decided to sit in the same suite for almost the entire flight, but that's a story for another day.)

I take BTC as booking my meal choice in advance, not as an additional option for my meal selections. So when I BTC, I don't expect to get/won't insist on alternative instead, regardless of meal loadings etc.

That's the way it's intended and I'm always grateful when the crew goes out of their way to accommodate. I'm on an ongoing project to photograph the entire BTC menu (Herculean task, yes, but when I started the endeavour the menu was much, much smaller ) and at some stations eg ex-SIN I'm out of things I actually want to eat. But ordered anyway just so that I can have the picture. So to any crew reading this, I know you folks work very hard and I'm not deliberately trying to be difficult.

Cost-cutting at play. Don't blame the crew. And don't think the crew is allowed to divulge the catering loading to pax.
