How strict is SQ with regard to overweight baggages?

At JFK on January 10, SQ had a supervisor in the jetway checking the weight of carryon bags. I saw a few business class passengers being force to gate check roller bags that looked big but clearly would bit into the bins.

I would ask them to rebook me on another airline.

I believe that sometime it depends on luck. I had three luggages with me while I was flying back from MEL last Dec.

The line was very long as the intended A380 was pull out of service, replaced by B744 and they had eight counters opened for check in.

The check-in one weigh around 21 at most. Hand carries almost 7 kgs for two. As per customer, only one check in is allowed; but the check in lady asked me to check-in all my hand carries + luggage. In the end I only had my coat with me, this is rather convenient for me.

Thank you to the nice lady whoever you are. Never got a chance to grab your name, the others at other counter were made to take out extra kilos or throw away their belongings. Pity them.

(Hint: go for young lady, they are often more friendly in Melbourne)

To/from USA allowance in J

I do have a question somewhat related to this topic - how strictly does SQ enforce the check-in baggage limit for travel to/from USA in J class?

Referring to SQ's website, the allowance in J is 2 x 23kg, whereas J passengers on UA, CX, and virtually every other airline allow 2 x 32kg.

I'm asking because I am planning a relocation to USA, and an allowance of 2 x 32kg on SQ will be very helpful, and using my *alliance gold status to get a 3rd 32kg allowance will be even better.

Also, any particular reason why the limit is 2 x 23kg on SQ? Is it to cater for additional fuel required for the non-stop A340-500 flights?

The 2 x 23kg limit seems to be a cost cutting measure as it is valid for all USA flights, not just the non-stops. Yes, ridiculously it is the same allowance for all classes (F/J/Y).
In my experience, they might let you go with 1-2 kg excess per bag (YMMV) but definitely not 32 kg.
If you really need the allowance, I would suggest flying EVA Air (BR) -- for J class their allowance (to and from USA) is 2 x 32 kg plus 1 x 23 kg.

It's obviously 2 x 7kg because it would be absurd if Y gets 1 x 7kg and J gets 2 with a combined maximum of 7kg.

Common sense would indicate weight per piece but airlines don't always operate via common sense...
