I heard that each pilot's meal comes from a different catering company than the other, so if there is food poisoning, only one pilot is affected. It may be a rumor, who knows? Interesting to note, however, that one pilot eats at a time because the other must be at the controls.

Maybe not an entirely different catering company, but just a different kind of meal.

        From Wikipedia:
Food safety with technical crew meals (pilots and flight engineers) is sometimes even stricter than for passengers. Many foodstuffs are banned completely from crew meals, including all egg products and often any dairy that has not been ultra-heat treated. The meals supplied on some airlines are labeled with the position of the crew member for whom they are intended, and no technical crew member eats any of the same products as his or her colleague. This ensures that each pilot eats a different meal to minimize the risk of all pilots on board being ill.

I never knew that it's from different catering companies, I always thought it was just different meals?

You're probably right. It's just different meals. PI66341 made a good point that it would be too much of a hassle to have two separate catering companies.

Yeah and we are talking about only a pilot meal.

Catering company could probably reject the order. Haha.

Type of meals based on seniority?

I always which crew members get to eat unserved business class meals vs. normal economy class fare. Is it based on seniority, ie IFS gets first right of refusal followed by LSS and then the gals in blue? Or perhaps it's based on rostering, if junior stewardess is working in biz/first class, she gets to each the meals there?

I really dont know how the pilots are gonna eat with the tray on their lap!
                    That is so uncomfortable!

Some of the airbus model do have a tray on their seats. Like pull and fold out.

What about boeing? They really used their laps?

If you comparing this way like unserved business class meals will be eaten by crew.

Then what if the load on that flight is full and there are no meals left? Or rather business class / economy food on that day caused a stomachache or something?

I believe they still fall in the crew category . Maybe each crew(stewardess/pilots) get different food(chicken/beef/fish).

The Boeing pilots place the meal trays on their laps.

                        Photos in MH Boeing 777-200
The MH pilot had this to say: "something to share of where i eat…while at work..no tables, tray on my lap…at 35,000 feet or 39,000 feet…he he he"

Nice to see that the MH pilots have meals on J/C class silverware and cutlery. If this is what the MH pilots have for meals, then I'm quite sure the SQ pilots are similar, and probably even better.

Depends on the pilot/IFS relationship. Its been known that some have had their meals served course by course..

yes, the pilots have to chose different meals but from the same catering ie for SQ its SATS Catering. For Airbus A330, A40 and A380 tech crew - they have a foldable tray that they use as the airbuses dont have the yoke in front of them but uses side-stick for movement controls.
