I really hope that SQ wont allow voice calls on their flights, it would be terrible to be on an overnight flight and you are trying to sleep whilst your fellow passenger decides to have a loud conversation on his mobile. Hopefully they will charge the same rates as for the current in-seat phones... Has any of you actually used these before (aside from the seat-to-seat call function)?

            I think phone+data is a great idea.

Yes, there are business matters which are so important that the cost of the call is totally irrelevant. There are also personal matters which fall in the same category, e.g. a sick relative.

Yes, a call may inconvenience others but a plane is public transport. Besides phone calls, there are the engines, other pax talking, babies and children, call bells, people moving around the cabin, inflight announcements, loud snoring etc. Noise cancellation or - even better - noise isolation (not the cruddy foam earplugs handed out but proper ones like Etys) is the way to go.

I thought it was only data + SMS. Hope so anyway otherwise I can see a few unfortunate air rage incidents brewing.

I think the data (wi-fi/internet access) is a great idea (never used to, granted...) but use of phones is silly and will undoubtedly lead to problems when some loud mouth idiot is giving it the big one while others want some peace and quiet. This is what you currently get and would be right to expect on an aircraft, especially at night and in J or F.

Surf, send e-mail or SMS on some SIA flights

Surf, send e-mail or SMS on some SIA flights

Singapore Airlines (SIA) is offering its passengers yet another activity to help time fly when they are in the air.

They can surf the Internet, send e-mail and exchange SMS messages with people on the ground.

But the new extra is in its infancy, available only on a few of its Airbus 345, non-stop flights to the United States.

'The SMS service would be useful for sure, to coordinate pick-ups at destinations or arrange meeting schedules.'

SIA also has Internet connectivity on several A-380 superjumbos but the SMS option is not available yet.

Does the 380 have internet access? I have always seen the lan slot obviously in the seat and once connected my computer to it through cable but got nothing. That was in late 2010 though.

It seems to imply that it is already available, is that true?

It wasn't available on SQ317 this morning. I wonder if it's on SQ21/22 yet.

FWIW – SQ PR today revealed they be formally launching inflight Internet "in the coming weeks when more aircraft are equipped" and confirmed it's already running on some A380s and A345s, with plans at US$12 for 10MB and US$30 for 26MB.

Also confirmed that voice calls will not be allowed, both GSM calls "and VoIP services like Skype".

I wonder why the airbuses rather than the boeings?

When the first 77Ws were delivered, they had been wired for connexion but removed by end-'08. I presume there had been wiring/space is available for this new initiative so why not the 77Ws.
