    Yes they did.

The route was SIN-VIE-AMS-YYZ in the mid 90's. Route was withdrawn after about 6 months after Air Canada complained to the Canadian Govt that SQ was picking up passengers from european markets ie VIE and AMS which could have flown on AC instead (which was ironic as AC didn't fly from those cities).

The Canadian Govt yielded to AC and restricted 5th Freedom traffic rights from Europe to YYZ. And thus it was pointless for SQ to fly from SIN and not be allowed to pick up and drop off passengers between Europe & Toronto.

So it cancelled the much touted first transatlantic crossing.

6 months later, SQ started SIN-FRA-JFK to a much bigger fanfare. And the YYZ route was soon forgotten. Except to its cabin crew who dreaded going to YYZ in the middle of the Canadian winter!

I remember that route in 1991 and they used the Megatops for that route. I was upset with AC for that route cancellation. It did last a year tho'. They decided to cancel it 6 months after it started, but kept it until the JFK route started. But I heard they may axe JFK as well. Is this true?

Also, when they operated the JFK route, SQ used to have another route by the Megatop. I believe it was SIN-AMS-EWR, which left 5 mins apart from the JFK flight. What was the reason for cancelling the AMS in that flight? Lack of capacity?

I think they cancelled AMS-EWR when they received the A345 which meant they no longer needed to make the stop at AMS.

I just saw SQ's Batey-produced print ad about this SIN-VIE-AMS-YYZ in Newsweek and Time. According to the ad, the "Grand Atlantic Crossing" of steamship travel in the 1920s and 1930s can be revived once more with SQ's Atlantic crossing (for the first time), of course, with the inflight service even other airlines talk about. The route started in 1 June 1991 with a Megatop. I'm gonna search further for the JFK flights. (Sorry, I can't resist to post. I love lurking anyways.)

OH NO, This had better not go as well. I'm going to study in New York City in a few year's time, so it'll be such as a pity if there's no link to Singapore from NYC. And what would be better than linking Singapore with the world's greatest city?

                        Huh?

If you would follow the thread here, we discussing the possibility of SIN-FRA-JFK being discontinued.

So what's the solution for a prospective New York university student from Singapore who can only afford Economy Class if SIA discontinue SIN-JFK flights? Hopefully the suggested route involves at least SIA and 1 other Star Alliance member, is as cheap as before, and convenient when changing planes.

The first criterion is easy to satisfy. All three at once, not so much.

                                24 hours to go

In a couple hours, the last SQ18 flight will depart Singapore.
In about 24 hours, the flight will land at YVR for the last time.
In about 28 hours, SQ17 will take off for the last time from YVR.
