It is not just low loads. It doesn't apply on any flights with low loads. It applies only for certain flights that they have agreed on for variable crewing.
For example, if it happens that SIN-LAX only showing very very low load, because the flight is not in the list of variable crewing flights, the SIN-LAX flight will still have full crew.

As I said previously, I was told that it is only whenever possible - for example on same day turnaround flights on which loads are low on both sectors. I would have imagined they still need to send full set of crews for long hauls for the risk of changes to loads of the return or continuing flights closer to the day of departure.

I understand what you said previously. My example perhaps to extreme being a long haul. And since you give an example for same day turnaround with low loads, I will try to rephrase my answer. For SIN-CMB-SIN same day turn around, even though both ways were low loads, there will not be reduction in crew. The reason is, which is I was trying to point out, that CMB is not one of the flight routes that was agreed on for variable crewing flights.
Of course, with the worsen of the world economy, the list of variable crewing flights will get expanded.

After reading this thread I understand that SQ308/319 might be cancelled on Feb 1th, 18th 25th = all are flights on wednesdays.
Would it be wise to fly SQ319 on wednesday Feb4th, hoping that its a fairly empty flight? (or maybe a bad choice, it they cancel it?)

Today my flight SQ308 from SIN to LHR on Monday, 9th March was cancelled. After I talked with SIAs reservation hotline, I was informed that all SQ308 flights on mondays in march (2, 9, 16, 23, 30) were cancelled!

Because it`s an award flight I´m looking forward what happens next!? Maybe they will rebook me on the A380 later that day?!

When was this, in the last few weeks ?. If so, that's hardly surprising is it, as it's current still the peak Christmas and New Year holiday period. I fly back to MAN in a few days, the flight is full and has been for months. We booked our flights in Feb last year.

Loads at this time of the year are no indication of how things are. Wait til after CNY for a better idea.

They won't leave it until the last minute. If the Monday flight is cancelled it's unlikely the Sunday one will be as well. If it is, you'll know shortly.

On SQ 319 yesterday, flight was quite packed.

I can also say that the same green kebaya I spoke to that was on SQ 308 (on the 25th of December) said the reason why there were barely 40 people on that flight that day to LHR (and why the 774 was still flying), was because it was a full load back from LHR.

Since the additional capacity seems to still be absolutely required ex London which (it seems) can only be provided by the 774 for now, I don't think there will be any changes until, if what Pascal7784 has pointed out does come to pass in March, then most likely affected pax will be switched over to one of the other whalejets.

And I'm also sure they will inform all SQ308 affected pax in good time and not last-minute.
