I'm no great audiophile, but recently had the opportunity to test drive both CGK's and upright man's noise cancelling headphones

upright man was most kind in lending Mrs. nickbot and I his PXC300's for our SQ321 leg in Economy (whilst he was in Raffles). This was the first time I've ever tried noise cancelling headphones, and for a complete beginner, they were simply another world compared to the standard headsets. Yes, as per upright man's comments, they do get a little uncomfortable after prolonged wear, but I think for me this was a small price to pay for the enhanced experience. As Mrs. nickbot and I were swapping the PXC300s over between us every so often, the difference between noise cancelling and non n/c was (probably as expected for those with prior experience) incredible. Nice to wear the n/c headset even when not actually watching a film, just to cut out the ambient

Now for CGK's QC3s,...perhaps an unfair comparison, seeing as I was busy lounging in his SkySuite during this component of the road test (as a scientist/engineer, I'm conscious that the experimental conditions were far from being the same ) The QC3s were excellent, probably more comfortable than the PXC300s and sounded wonderful - not wanting to pre-empt my trip report, but this was certainly helped along by a cold glass of Krug and the large KrisWorld screen.

For my needs, I think I'll be investing in the PXC300s, for a few reasons:

    1. They are cheaper (a consideration, seeing as I have to buy two pairs!)
    2. They use AAA batteries rather than special rechargables
    3. They allow sound to pass through even with dead batteries
    4. Nice compact design, fold up into a most convenient little semi-hard case

...not in any way putting down the QC3s, which were fantastic, just out of my price range and for a predominantly Economy travelling pattern, maybe a little bulky to fit in my already bulging bag!

Hope this helps anyone making a purchasing decision - now just to find a good price on 2 pairs of PXC300s!!

You can probably try QC2. It is comfortable on the ears with the same (I would say the same but some actually says better than) quality of sound of QC3. Operates only on 1 AAA battery as well.

Yes, you probably do better with QC2 than QC3 and PXC300.

          Hello again Nickbot !

My additional reasons for choosing Sennheiser PXC300s:
          1) much cheaper than Boses
          2) I prefer its size and looks compared to the big BOSE words and shiny material used in Boses (as I am occasionally escorting medical patients on board, I need to at least look like I am on the ball )
          3) I have even used them on buses, trains and walking along the streets - they are lightweight enough.

Disadvantage of QC3: - uses proprietary rechargeables - once they wear off, you can't even use them as normal headphones.

However, the reason I lent you my PXC300 was that I was in J class, and frankly, those black ones they supply are more comfortable and suppress noise better - and the QC3 is probably even better.

So to each his own - I agree for someone like CGK, who just wants the finest noise-cancelling available in a luxurious setting, the QC3 is the better choice.

Anyway, the PXC300 price of $390 each in Krisworld is quite reasonable, just make sure you ask a PPS member to buy it for you for a 10% discount. Think of your long BNE-SIN-LHR and then train trip home - well worth it.

BTW, don't skimp and buy PXC200 or 250, they are cheaper for a reason - discomfort.

          Cheers !

Thanks again upright man and others for the tips

After our SQ321 trip, Mrs nickbot and I visited one of the electrical shops in Changi and were surprised to find Sennheiser PXC...'s for less than on the flight so were about to buy two pairs (worked out at about 85 GB Pounds each) - they turned out to be something like PXC270s or similar (can't remember exactly) rather than 300s,...I tried some on and they were definately not as comfortable as your 300s so I guess I'll keep looking!

Thank you once again for the kind loan of your 300s - the opportunity for a 12.5 hour test drive was wonderful! I am indeed thinking of my long return journey and may be investing soon!

            Best wishes,

            Nick

In the electronic shop in Singapore, there is also Audio Technica Active Noise Cancellation headphone that uses only 1 AAA battery, allows sound to pass through, and comfortable on ears for about S$ 280 - 290. I tried it on before and it was good. Claim to cancel 85% of the noise out.

Yeah, don't buy PXC200's or 250's - they have inferior technology (apparently affected by radio waves or mobile phone waves - maybe not relevant on board ?), and also the ear pieces are PVC rather than leather.

PXC250's - I saw them on sale before in Singapore for S$179 which is about 60 UK pounds.

I am just thinking of your long flight home - BNE-SIN-LHR, thats about 20 hours flight ; worth buying at least one pair to at least swap between you and Mrs nickbot.

However, they may be more expensive in BNE, so consider asking a PPS member to help you by buying first thing on board ....

Bought my PXC 300 in Zurich when my QC2's headband broke on my flight there....I think it was $280 Swiss franc.

The QC2 was replaced one for one instantly when I got back in Singapore. The new design have taken care of the anticipated cracks in the headband.

Of all the NC headphones I own, the QC2 is still my favorite.
