  • Why 'Kris'?

    Hey all

I know this may sound like a stupid question, but why does SIA use 'Kris' to describe all of it's services and such (eg, SilverKris, KrisWorld, KrisFlyer, etc etc)..

The reason why I ask is that, well my first name is indeed Kris (well Kristopher, Kris for short) - heh my parents wanted me to be different, and I can safely say, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED (and then some lol)

I know that in some European cultures, that Kris is the "proper" way of spelling Chris, so this name is not uncommon to see, and well, not that I am expecting this to happen, SQ has never made a big deal about it (only my last name, which is pronounced Aladdin [but not spelled that way lol] - just dont call me Jasmine)

So yeah, what does 'Kris' mean?

    thanks people!
I'm still waiting for my cookie as my first name is Kris

But why would SQ want to associate itself with a blade/weapon?

I obviously did! I tried to look at that read the article in the link to find any implied meanings in the object but there seriously wasnt anything significant except, "It was said that some kris helped prevent fires, death, agricultural failure, and myriad other problems."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the SilverKris magazine mention the meaning of the Kris somewhere... iirc, near the contents page usually..

"SILVERKRIS is named after the kris, a Malay weapon used in the 14th century. Legend has it that the kris possessed many qualities, the greatest of which was its ability to anticipate danger and protect its owner. The kris was treated with utmost respect and often became a family heirloom. Today, its function is purely ceremonial. In choosing a kris made of silver as the symbol of our service, we acknowledge both the quality and reputation of Malay silverware and our roots in Malayan Airways, which began in 1947."

Btw SQ doesn't seem to offer KrisChili anymore
