Malaysia Airlines uses a contract lounge in Hong Kong, which is not spectacular, both in naming nor substance (i believe it's unimaginatively called the Hong Kong Lounge), however, it's not the worst place in the world to wait for a plane

CGK-HGK for $800 - I wish - that would make all of the decisions very easy
      Sorry, still dont get it.
      I just checked SIA website:

CGK-SIN-HKG (return ticket) price without taxes:

      First class:USD2384

We're not comparing against Y - we're comparing against MH J which is the best value J option for the times we want. We don't really want to fly Y out of CGK so it doesn't come into the equation really.

We're also only getting one way tickets so the return doesn't come into it.. We're flying PER-CGK-SIN-HKG-KUL-BKI-KUL-PER.

        MH J for 2 pax = appx. A$1900 CGK-HKG
        SQ F for 2 pax = appx. A$2700 CGK-SIN-HKG

I guess most of us fall into this category it is just a question of how often we have to travel in Y

I'd agree with your husband that SQ F on the 77W is better than on the 744 - a newer generation of seat, a huge LCD screen etc. The only reason I can of for preferring the 744 would be if you like to fly on a 747 (being a large plane with an upper deck) compared to a 77W.

Geez I'm an annoying newbie aren't I! I might go off and do another search myself!
I have only tried the 77W F seat from SIN-HKG but I was not impressed. I thought as a seat the 744 seat is miles better. The 744 seat is much more like a comfy arm chair whereas the 77W seat is more like a park bench.

The IFE is better on the 77W with more choice and a bigger screen but I was so busy eating and drinking I had no time to watch the IFE

CGK SQ lounge: not great. The food offerings are not bad, though, and indeed better than at HKG. Beverage selection is limited. The lounge itself is cramped, with limited newspapers/magazines and almost nothing in English. Sometimes it'd be so crowded, I'd have to go over to the J side to find a seat or use the slow internet. (Same food selection at J side.)

F seat on 77W vs. 744: much has been discussed about this, here or on flyertalk. Personally, I prefer the 744 F seat, an all around good seat & bed, vs. the 77W F seat, which is superior for sleeping and not as comfortable for sitting, although I understand SQ has enhanced the seat by adding a cushion and anti-slipping mechanism of some sort. Also, I prefer the F cabin ambiance of the 744 to the 77W, which I find too small and closed-in.

                    I just checked out the pricing...its US$1285 for CGK-SIN-HKG for 1 person.

If it's for 2 pax, then it will be around the same as the price of 1 return trip. Hmm...sounds tempting enough for a honeymoon present for my wife in Summer this year

You say that like it's a bad thing???

Doing nice things for your wife can have dangerous and unexpected consequences. She will begin to expect more and more and your wallet will suffer! My husband's does anyhow That is what marriage is all about..!

Ya think ?!. It's always rammed and I think it's quite poor to be honest, especially bearing in mind the market they have ex-CGK. I believe a certain local TPP doesn't even bother now and goes to Starbucks instead.

Saying it's better than HKG doesn't say much either. That's a dreadful lounge.

                            That's true

Maybe just let her fly C class first

                              Hi there,

For a day flight in SQ F with full lunch/diner I would go for the 744 because:
                              1. the table is much bigger
                              2. sitting side by side is nicer on the 744
                              3. the seat has a much better lounge chair type position than on the 77W
                              4. Krisworld has more than enough on the 744 to keep you busy on a 3 hours flight
You actually might consider using their Book the Cook feature on the SIN-HKG sector (although I do not know if it is possible on short flights)

Anyway enjoy your F experience. Having it with SQ is like having your first time with a top model, something you get use to very easily
