9V-SKP was flown SIN-AUH as SQ8898 today (09APR17). Anybody knows why?

That's one of the most mysterious flight records I've ever seen.

As a result, SQ346 operated with an upper-Y variant and was significantly delayed. In the last week, SQ346 has been delayed four times, twice for a few hours. Seriously, SQ... Of all the people in the world, you do not want to have punctuality issues with the Swiss!

SKL has been grounded for longer than a month, SKT keeps spending a few days here and there out of the sky and now SKP has headed off to a destination SQ no longer services. On top of this, SQ217/8 is losing its A380 in a few weeks from now and SKA is doing air tests.

SKQ left SIN this morning more than 2 hours late - I am waiting in PVG to get back home... In the last six weeks I had 3 flights retimed: from SYD, HND and now PVG. My arrival into MEL the other day was more than an hour.

I think this morning's SQ830 delay was most probably due to Shanghai ATC and/or weather clearance issues. There were other Shanghai-bound flights yesterday night/today morning that was severely delayed.

Always thought SQ did their maintenance in-house. Remember seeing a KE A380 being towed to the SIAEC hangar's some time back.

The long term costs of operating these planes must be starting to bite. They spend a significantly longer amount of time in maintenance and that's a lot of investment sitting on the ground earning nothing.

Perhaps SKP is going off-site for maintenance because Singapore facilities are at capacity? A lot of them seem to be grounded right now.

According to source who has been reliable in the past, they are struggling for capacity. Might explain the slow down the in 77W refit.

Makes complete sense. First of all, they've just taken delivery of a huge bunch of A350s, while few craft have left so they have a bigger fleet. Then SWF and SWH are both presumably undergoing heavy maintenance and/or refitting. SKL has been on the ground for ages. There must be a couple of others I'm not monitoring as well. In the past 6 or 7 years I can't remember such a major fleet transition ever taking place as now.

Singapore Airlines wants new Airbus A380 for Sydney in October

EXCLUSIVE | Singapore Airlines is shooting for an October debut for the first of its new Airbus A380s, with Sydney favoured for the inaugural flight of the updated superjumbo with its all-new first class suites and business class seats.

Sydney was chosen as the first destination for Singapore Airlines' original Airbus A380, which was also the world's first commercial superjumbo flight, in October 25, 2007, and the airline is keen to repeat this milestone on the same day in 2017.

"Whether we will get there on the same day is still a bit touch and go, because the aircraft is still going through new product fittings," Singapore Airlines Regional Vice-President for South West Pacific, Mr TK Tan, told Australian Business Traveller on the sidelines of a dinner in Sydney to celebrate 50 years of the Singaporean flag-carrier flying to Australia.

"If that doesn't happen it may be there a few weeks later or a few months later, but we are working hard all together to make it happen and for Sydney to be the first point in our network to have the new product."

Tan hinted that London would be next on the superjumbo's dance card, "but we are waiting to surprise everyone on where it will go and the plans for the whole A380 fleet."

The new A380s will not only introduce a new design for the airline's first class suites but will see those suites relocated from the superjumbo's lower deck to the upper deck.

There will be fewer suites than the current 12 – between six and eight are likely – but each will be much larger than today's version, and reportedly close in size to the 3.8mē of the first class apartments of Gulf rival Etihad's own Airbus A380.

Further along the all-premium upper deck will be an all-new design business class seat.

Expected to springboard from today's Boeing 777-300ER 'Next Generation' business class, which Singapore Airlines launched in July 2013, the new seats have said to have already been showcased to selected top-tier KrisFlyer travellers to fine-tune more practical aspects of the design.

One source tells Australian Business Traveller that Singapore Airlines has also given consideration to a small lounge area – although not a bar per se – nestled into the rear of the upper deck.

This same business class seat will also appear on a new ultra-long range version of the Airbus A350 due in late 2018, which Singapore Airlines will use to restart non-stop flights from Singapore to Los Angeles, New York and a third as-yet-unnamed US destination.

Singapore Airlines is expected to pull back the curtains on both new products in July or August, ahead of the delivery of the newest A380.

SQ already has an A380 configuration which doesn't feature upper deck Y, on almost half its A380s. Been around for years. Don't think most of the flying public cares.

I recently had some flights in Y 380 upper deck (SIN-AKL return) and I had a window seat. I think these are the best Y seats in the sky. There is a storage compartment next to the seat. Frankly I don't care about the storage but it gives you additional space (you can comfortably put your arm on it). I like the small section and 2-4-2 configuration as well. Definitely better than the A350 seats and it was even more silent than the A350 cabin. I don't know whether that is the case for the main deck. Unfortunately it's becoming rare to get an Y seat upper deck.
