  • OUT OF THIS WORLD treatment by SQ Crew

Coming in on SQ 25 this morning from JFK, one of the crews learned that I would be staying at the same hotel with them. This was then conveyed to the inflight supervisor and 10 minutes later he came to offer me a ride with the entire SQ crew from Frankfurt Main to the hotel - an invitation that I gladly accepted of course. Who can say "No" to a ride with SQ crew and the girls? I am surprised to see how lively and sincere all the crew members were on the bus.

The "myth" of SQ crews are robots who only follow the SOP is just the "myth". What the SQ crews did this morning reflect the high standard of SQ service from the heart and not from the book.

Anyone care to share his or her best personal experience with SQ crew?

I remember when I was a kid, back when there was no AVOD. I kept complaining to my parents I was bored. I remember a flight stewardess bringing me to the cockpit to check out what the pilots were doing. She also signed me up for the Junior Jetter's Club. Besides that she gave me free airplane models and some miniboard games. I don't know if most of you remember but they use to gave mini backgammon (sp?) and mastermind games. I think that is when I became really interested in flying. So thank you to the stewardess that day that looked after me.

I do remember the mini backgammom and chess games from SQ. I haven't been lucky enough to be on the cockpit. These days cockpit access would be impossible for any passengers.

Maybe UMB could tell us something about the ride to the hotel? I would be interested to know how it went!

Dec 2002, landed in SIN on SQ35 (ORD-AMS-SIN) and left a book in the seat pocket. Connecting to SQ152 (SIN-CGK) and at the gate, saw the lovely FSS from SQ35 who was working on my aisle. She approached me and said that I had left the book (I still hadn't realized that I did!) and then handed the book back to me. I was totally speechless!!!

I didn't tell her that I was connecting to CGK and she managed to find out and she could've given the book to a ground staff, yet she went to my new gate and handed the book back to me personally! The gates were at opposite ends of the terminal and she probably just wanted to go home and get some sleep after a long flight, but no, she did all this!

I still remember the amazing and heart touching service of the SQ girls on my flight from SFO to Hong Kong. (Keep in mind that I was traveling in economy). I had forgotten that I left my memory card on the tray and it was collected and all the trash was thrown away. I told the FSS what happened and she immediately went through the trash bins looking for it. I stood in astonishment as I watched her and her fellow crew members dig through it. Luckily it was found. I’m really sad that I will be taking EVA this summer but SQ will always be the best no matter what.

As always, we don't take special note of Singapore Airline's service when things run smoothly. It is when things happen when the cabin crew goes out of its way to help, and that's when they really stand out from the competition! I'm quite sure a United FA wouldn't wait for one at the next gate or dig her way through the trash!

The ride was good. A lot of informal conversations exchanged among the girls and the guys as well. They are real human beings who love their job. I especially enjoyed the conversation regarding the challenge in fighting off gambling temptations when staying at a nice Crowne Hotel in Melbourne (SQ 217 crew hotel) and how to claim the GST back off the purchase made in Germany at FRA. At the end of the bus trip, one of the green batik SQ girl even picked up my luggage from the driver and handed it to me personally. Too bad the ride only lasted about 15 minutes.

You mean like this ..... Shamelessly copied from the article of the Brisbane Time published on May 16, 2007.

                Fog wreaks airline havoc
                Scott Rochfort | May 15, 2007

PASSENGERS on a United Airlines Boeing 747 endured a horrendous 27-hour journey from San Francisco to Sydney yesterday, when their flight was left stranded on the tarmac at Brisbane Airport - without a crew.

Fog in Sydney forced the diversion of two United flights to Brisbane early yesterday. But passengers on both aircraft were left to fend for themselves when their United crews clocked off, having exceeded their legal flying hours.

Nor were the passengers allowed to leave the aircraft, because customs at Brisbane was unable to clear them. "Due to [Department of Transport] regulations, passengers were kept on board for safety and security reasons," an airline spokeswoman said in an email to the Herald.

A relief United crew was flown on a domestic flight from Sydney to Brisbane to fly the first flight down to Sydney.

The first United flight, UA839 from Los Angeles, which was supposed to arrive at 6.10am, finally landed in Sydney at 1.05pm, after an epic 22-hour flight.

But passengers on the second flight, UA863, originally due to arrive in Sydney at 6.25am, had to sweat it out seven more hours.

They had to wait for the same crew that took flight UA839 to Sydney to fly back to Brisbane on a domestic flight to pick them up.

"Passengers were provided with water and juice at approximately 0945 to supplement provisions already on board the aircraft," the airline said. "United Airlines apologises for any inconvenience caused to passengers."

The fog in Sydney forced three Qantas flights from the US to divert to Brisbane and another from Tokyo to divert to Melbourne. They landed in Sydney three to four hours late.

The fog also delayed ferries and motorists throughout the morning rush. Ferry passengers were stranded after services were cancelled at 6am and slowly resumed from 8.30am. The fog lifted over most of Sydney by 10.15am.

The Bureau of Meteorology said fog was expected again today but may not be as widespread.

Ah so that may be an example of the reason why an SQ Talker at the recent Drinks Do swore he hated UA.

My favorite SQ crew episode occurred on a Y trip (because I didn't expect special treatment in Y). I left my KrisShop purchases in the overhead bin and realized that while I was waiting for my luggage at Changi. As I was deciding on how to report my loss, an SQ Boy breathlessly caught up to me and exclaimed, "You left this on the plane. I wanted to give it to you sooner, but you were walking so quickly!" Y'all know how quickly luggage gets delivered at Changi: as I was in the front part of the Y cabin, that was an impressive effort on his part.

Even better, when I was on a regional flight a few days later, he recognized me as I disembarked, and joked, "Hey I know you. Are you sure you didn't leave anything this time?"

Lots of special moments with SQ crew for me -- this just happens to be the one that tops the list of why I love flying with SQ.

(A close second was telling the IFS on my SIN-MNL flight that I flying to spend Christmas with my family -- and being handed a bag full of SQ children's stuff a few minutes afterwards, "to make sure they know what a nice uncle they have". This was as the sole passenger in F, though. That said, the service on that flight means that flight actually beats my few SkySuite flights by some margin. )

Sometimes I can't help but be amazed at and even admire the way Singapore Airlines and even the country itself is run. Iron-fisted rule, yes. A Minister Mentor maintaining a personal interest over the airline's direction, yes. You just can't deny that you need some form of control to put things in order. You give your unionised workers that bit more freedom, and they'll leave your dear passengers stranded on the plane, citing their "having exceeded their legal flying hours." Service on UA? What service?

Just curious, which hotel do they stay in ?
I heard from a FSS not long ago that they spend about 2.5 days in FRA before heading back to SG (I took the Sunday night flight and the crew will return on the Wed noon flight).

There is a Sheraton hotel just next to the airport (connected by a covered bridge to the hotel lobby). Stayed there once when I missed my connection flight on LH (expenses paid for by SQ). Maybe that location is too uninteresting for SQ crew ??

                        IIRC,

A crew that leaves SIN on SQ326, will do the SQ26 and 25 leg FRA-JFK one or two days later, then on the way back to SIN, do the SQ325 for a 8 or 9 day rotation in total, with night stops in FRA on both ways in and out and also JFK naturally.

A crew that leaves SIN on SQ26 doesn't go all the way. As you say, i think there's one clear day then they come home on SQ25.

Could be wrong. Don't know this for sure.

From what I observe, SQ crew tend to stay in downtown hotels. Not sure of the exact reason, but there sure is the bonus of shopping and eating opportunities.

You may be surprised the lengths UA crews will go to...

OTOH, when flying in North America, keep in mind you're not restricted to flying UA if you want to fly a *A carrier.

I am sure that is the exact reason, airports hotels are pretty depressing really... I know they are downtown SYD and AKL (remember your little wave to them KeithMel )
