OK, so no UA for me. I certainly wouldn't mind an SQ Girl helping me with luggage! In any case, I had such bad experiences with UA Domestic that I have banned this airline altogether.

Having said that, I used to have a very bad impression of NW, with its old planes and the fact that it's a legacy US carrier. Until recently, when my colleague flew on NW12 to Tokyo. It seems things have changed somewhat. It was mostly Singaporean crew on board. And they had the kind of friendly and casual demeanour you get with American FAs, not the robotic kind of treatment you get on SQ.

If 'robotic' means good service delivered with machine consistency, I actually prefer it to airlines on which I've had the distinct pleasure of FAs showing me their true feelings. And by this I mean behaviour that's generally the opposite of 'friendly and casual.'

All opinions shared are my own, and are not necessarily those of my employer or any other organisation of which I'm affiliated to.

I totally agree. Don't get me wrong; I'm not complaining about SQ! If I had to choose between "robotic" SQ and the "true feeling" US carriers, I would pick the former anytime!

Of course, at times I wish the SQ FAs could lower their defences a bit. Many times I try to crack jokes with them or chat them up in our Singaporean slang but they maintain a straight face.

do understand at times they do get 'hit on' so much...and do encounter some weirdos... -_-
and its a job after all...you'll be surprised how easy relaxed they are once off it...

I find that generally, when I joke with them while in my seat, say during meal service or while they're shuttling between galley and passengers, etc, they tend to maintain their "robotic" stance.

However, when I catch them during their off-peak times in the galley, they tend to be more relaxed. I have had many a good encounter with them on the former SQ20/SQ19 (now SQ38/SQ37). The long flights make for increased opportunities for informal interaction. I recall waiting through their rest periods (they have four four-hour blocks on the 16-hour flights) to catch my favourite FAs.

Retirement age is now 40 except for IFS for whom it's 55. It used to be the case that SQ girls with children were only scheduled for daytrips e.g. SIN-BKK-SIN same day, but that was dropped about a year or two ago. Fitness standards have eroded; I've seen some rather chubby ladies in red lately.

Just wondering where you got your facts from?

This is not wat the lady IFS told me on my last flight to Paris.

Chatting about it with more than a dozen SQ girls over the last year.

EDIT with new info i just got

It's actually (for FEMALES) 5 x 5 year contracts + 3 year extensions which require a stringent interview - NO age limit.

Maybe someone who knows better can confirm this

Exactly wat SQFG has posted before me

But to add on..LSS has up to max 4 contracts only.

CSS/IFS has up to 5 contracts (exc 3 years extension)

Fortunately, some of us chat with the correct SQ gals and gather proper info

The lady IFS I spoke to also highlighted that their Union is negotiating for new terms in their next Collective Agreement. So be prepared for changes

You mean you actually asked the same question to more than a dozen SQ girls (just last year alone)?

A bit OT; Does anyone know how hard it is for the girls (and boys) to get promoted to a higher rank?

I spoke with one SQ girl who said she'd been flying for over 5 years but had yet to don the green kebaya as promotions were hard to come by.
