  • Retirement Age of Singapore Girls?

There is an interesting discussion on TOF UA forum concerning SQ girls.

    http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=683394

Which makes me wonder about two things:

    1) What is the retirement age of SQ girls? 35 and 41 are mentioned in the above thread. Yet, I think some of the IFS could be over 41.

    2) UA reopened SIN crew base and many of the UA cabin crew are ex-SQ girls, so claimed. If ture, why would SQ girls abandon our beloved SQ and work for UA?

I stayed off posting on that thread

    1. 5 year renewable contracts. Don't know mandatory retirement age, but definitely over 41.

    2. Ex-SQ girls go everywhere. For UA: better base pay, more predictable flights - ie. less routes.

If I were an airline looking to recruit FAs with a proven service ethos, SQ Girls would certainly be in my sample of potential recruits.

UA pays better than SQ? Even at SIN base which is non-union and presumeably lower pay? UA unionized FAs are way overpaid.

I think it's pretty well-known that SIA doesn't pay well. On the outside, the airline projects a premium image, but within, it operates like a low-cost airline (While passengers feast on lobster thermidor, visitors at the CEO's office settle for instant noodles). High pay has never been used as lure for recruitment.

            How about the CEO himself?

So, what is the retirement age? Anyone knows?

One of my friends friends got a job at SQ FA based in SIN. Base salary is $1300 a month starting. 5 year contract.

From what I remember SQ girls are aways on 5 year contracts.

It's been a while since this subject cropped up, on the UA board particularly.

The supposed 'retirement' age was set at 35 for a blue Kebaya Stewardess unless they had been promoted to LSS or above. There are exceptions to this which sometimes entail having another 'test' to allow them to continue. This was a while ago so there is a chance things could have changed.

UA are not the only ones to go after SQ crew. EK regularly have a cabin crew recruitment day in Singapore. They know where to go for the best...

SQ Girls (& Boys) make their pay on overnight allowances - ie their layovers.

A typical 4 night layover can net them over $1000 or so depending on destination.

Being a UA Girl is more predictable especially those with families and who are married. UA does not descriminate on married females who already have children. And UA flights mean witin asia so they're away a max of a night. SQ Girls will be banned from flying the moment they have kids - irrespective if they regained their figures back after bearing children. And of course their flying schedules mean longer times away from home.

Plus UA is more strict on 'labour laws' based on US laws. Notice that UA FAs don't help with luggage etc and just stand around just like their US counterparts when passengers are boarding.

So that means the majority of CSS and Kebaya IFS aren't married and none of them have kids, then?

SQ do allow married stewardesses and those who had children to continue to work, but do believe that they need to be at least LSS and above.

I met one C Stewardess and one L Stewardess that have children. Believed they modified their policy from the past.

My cousin who is an IFS has a son of 12 years old. So guess the policy is no longer valid.

Not sure where you get your information, but this is not true.

I know several SQ FAs who have children. Many have the seniority to maintain regional (rather than long-haul) schedules, so they do not spend several nights away from home concurrently. The airline also tries to accomodate those who have had children by flexibility in scheduling.
