  • Is SIN-LHR-JFK still wanted by SQ?

When I was growing up, there was a campaign by SQ to be given rights to fly between LHR and NYC.

I think they finally got it during Tony Blair's term in office.

    Are they still interested?

If so, they should have bought the 6 slots BMI sold to BA

Then no need to speculate about SIN-FRA-JFK or SIN-TPE-JFK.

    Good for *Alliance too

Did they ever get those rights? I thought it was CX that got the LHR-JFK rights in exchange for VS getting HKG-SYD.

      I thought they did.

But it was a pyrrhic victory because there weren't any LHR slots to operate these flights

It was part of the UK-SIN open skies agreement. We had a thread on it:

I think that's one of the reasons why SQ bought 49% blindly into Virgin....

            Thanks for the link.

Strange why BD would sell to BA instead of *Alliance partner.

Available slots in LHR are as rare as hen's teeth. More so without 3rd runway in the foreseeable future

Add that to my wish list... SIN-LHR-JFK

I think the problem is, regardless of quality of the airline, it's almost impossible to compete with just one flight per day when the others are operating 3-4 flights daily (or 10, in the case of BA!), offering high flexibility and capacity for business travellers.

It'd be very difficult to attract enough premium traffic to make LHR-JFK work on its own, as you can see from the deep discounts that SQ had to offer for FRA-JFK. And if they're not going to sell enough to sustain LHR-JFK by itself to a reasonable degree, then there's little point insisting on LHR over, say, FRA where you also have the benefit of excellent connections with LH.

So, I'd say that LHR-JFK is probably one of those things that look really good on paper, but in reality nowhere near the expectations.

In practicality, isn't this the reason why you don't see AC flying into SIN and opting to ocde-share with SQ on YVR>>>HKG>>>SIN ?

                SQ should do just that
