  • Singapore Airlines Benefits From Newly Signed UK-SIN Open Skies Agreement

In a sign of progress towards greater liberalisation and freedom of choice for consumer, the United Kingdom and Singapore have signed an Open Skies Agreement.

(SIA) can now fly to any point in the UK, carry domestic passengers, and even base its planes in the country, using UK as a hub to operate to any other country.

'This is indeed a trail-blazing agreement concluded between two forward-looking countries that share a common objective of promoting free competition in the aviation sector,' said Minister for Transport Raymond Lim.

'It also reflects the strong bilateral ties between Singapore and the UK.'
Now Singapore Airlines (SIA) aircraft can also pick up passengers from London's Heathrow Airport and fly them onwards to other cities, including those in the United States.
One assume British Airways and Virgin Atlantic also have cabotage rights in Singapore

Never mind that hellhole in West London, what about some additional flights from ickle old MAN ?.

They still haven't said Yay or Nay to the request for three additional weekly flight to Changi from here, despite numerous requests. Never mind AMS or CPH, get another 772ER up here fellas.

A Friday afternoon departure ex-MAN will do just fine thank you very much......

Well at least MAN is going back to daily B77Es!

Indeed, but if it hadn't been for the A3LATE(Y) we would probably never have lost two weekly flights anyway.

SQ has been pushing for this for a long time. Hoperfully more competition on the LHR-JFK route will bring the prices down a bit.

On SQ ?. I seriously doubt that. They'd sell on their product not price on LHR-JFK, same as CX would.

I thought CX had got rights to fly LHR-JFK, what happened to that ?.

If I have to put up with LHR for my TATL trips, I might as well have SQ as one of my options.

I wonder from which airline SQ will get the LHR slots.

I agree SQ won't bring the price down. I just hope SQ doesn't charge too much of a premium on the TATL routes (if they come to pass).

BD seem to enjoy flogging LHR slots to improve their bottom line so they should give them a call. They should have a few spare if the rumours of cutbacks to (or even dropping altogether) the MAN flights are true.

I wonder if SQ will be dropping FRA-JFK in favour of LHR-JFK in the not too distant future? That is assuming that they can get the right slots etc.

I had the impression one reason SQ couldn't move the discussion forward was that in previous rounds, it had given away as much access through SIN as British airlines needed. BA's scaling down of its Oz flights confirmed that initial impression.

                        I wonder what changed.

Alitalia perhaps? Some weeks ago it said that Alitalia wanted to sell its slots.

I thought those were mainly going to the US carriers in sky team (i.e. DL, CO, NW), but who knows.

Indeed. It's one of the industries worst kept secrets that the that ScaryTeam members - particularly AF & KL - have kept the short routes slots at LHR to enable their partners to use them when open skies kicks in.
