  • Winter in Bali: A tale of St. Regis

After many months of negotiation and compromise, clothes rending and visa applications, my family decided that we should NOT go to India for our Winter holiday. It was a fateful decision as we then had to find another idyllic spot to vacay. It was about 3am for me in the UK, and I gave up and asked "Why not Bali", although I knew the answer would probably be "we've been there so many times already" or "again?!". I don't know... even with the hordes of tourists, and over commericialisation, Bali still remains an beautiful place to me, and it's very exciting whenever I land there, to re-enter a place where relaxation is an occupation and enjoyment the only necessity.

So it was at 3am in the morning and sometime at the end of the work day in Singapore, barely 2 days ago that we decided that we must be in Bali between the 28th and 30th of December.

The question of hotel then came up. Everything up high on the list at Tripadvisor had been booked up, and I was left with the 4 Seasons Sayan (in Ubud) or the St. Regis. I had been to the 4 Seasons but not stayed there, it was beautiful and the setting enchanted. However, I could not help but be drawn to the St. Regis, the price was a bit higher (though lets be honest, on this end of the hotelling scale, the prices are "if you have to ask, sir, you can't afford it"), but it was newer and was by the beach! I convinced my Mom, who is an ardent fan of the 4 Seasons, but countered her by saying: BUT THE ST. REGIS IS NEW!, and in a flash we were booked.

Now all that is left is trying to figure out what to/or not to do in Bali. I humbly ask the SQtalkers out there to offer any suggestions (I am definitely planning on stumbling into Ubud), and in return I will do a nice trip report with a prodigious amount of photos.

Really excited for this trip and really looking forward to tell you all about it!

The only thing not to do in Bali is to go to Kuta. That area is just too crowded and the one way traffic arrangement is just not effective unless the government of Bali widen the streets in that area which will never happen.

Everything else is a must do and see in Bali. Seminyak's night and dining scenes are not to be missed. Lying down by the pool bar on the Nusa Dua beach in the St. Regis is a total bliss. My wife and I spent 4 nights there last December and we loved it. Had a villa with a pool and enjoyed the delicious lobster and foie gras breakfast. Even the dinner we had in our last night at the Kayuputih restaurant by the pool and the beachfront was very nice.

Ubud and the surrounding areas of course are still the places to enjoy and visit. Just to see how the Balinese transforms arts into their everyday lives in and around Ubud is amazing. Well, I can go on and on about Bali. After all, it is still one of my best holiday spot in the region if not the world.

By the way, if you would like to get yourself out of the airport quickly, you should get St. Regis to organize the pick you up before the immigration so you can have all your visa necessities done for you in no time. This service is available for a fee. Well, enjoy Bali and I am sure you will love it again.
