For me: Pre-2008, it was C for basically everyone regardless of duration. The occasional F and even R for the higher positions.

Nowadays, you must be the CEO to even get on SQ Y

Peon: J for flight duration >=5 hrs
VP and up: J for flight duration >=3 hrs

Post Lehman
All ranks: J for flight duration >=8 hrs

2. 2nd life - All staff permitted in J Class for flying more than 5 hours.

I'm more or less at your 2nd life stage at the moment. Rarely need to go beyond 5 hours here, however we can burn our own stash of KF miles to upgrade if we so desire (or top up the difference by ourselves). So far, no point to top-up...
