But I heard the Leica version is about 50% more expensive than the LX version. As for LX5, I had it in my hands this past weekend and decided not to go for it because it is simply not pocketable.

I am now seriously looking at Canon S95 as it does have the same f2 lens and it is very pocketable. I need a real pocket camera because I do own a 7D already. Well, let's see if any new model will be announced this week in Cologne.

Agree with this LX5's non pocketable hassle...
But its low light capability is truly ab fab...
And this aspect only has conquered the hassle aspect (for me...)

I use the SQ socks pouch as a camera case for my LX3.

It does slip into my jeans that way... which says something about the size of my jeans perhaps

But the new Canon S95 is very attractive because it is more compact and has a built in lens cover. Not so good pics though ( I'm told by the boffins ).

              Haven't decided... LX5 vs S95

Does the D-Lux 5 look somehow slimmer than the LX-5? It looks like it, from the pics... (Leica has no handgrip unless bought separately). Could be the way to go, if it's slimmer...

...plus you get Lightroom bundled with the D-Lux I believe - for some this may represent significant value and offset the extra cost over the LX-5. Also I'd imagine resale values will be maintained at higher levels than a depreciating Panasonic.

                    Thanks for the tips, 9V-SIA....
Now I know what to use as a pouch for my LX5 instead of the bulky leather case/pouch that the shop gave me.....
Hmmm.... Which one I'll use? The dark brown from the now has disfunctioned old F socks or the baby blue from J?
                    Dilemma oh dilemma....

Looking at the night shots at ISO 1600 and ISO 3200, I was quite surprised that I found the S95 samples better exposed and with crisper details. Sure, the Canon PowerShot S95 was marketed as a low light specialist but the idea that it can better the pedigree of the Panasonic LX-series in image quality is certainly a real affirmation for the HS system of the S95. This makes taking the S95 with you to dinner parties or just a night out a really good option. I would only recommend the LX5 to those who really need to shoot at very high shutter speeds such as 1/2000 to 1/4000 seconds which is something the S95 cannot do. Of course, if you prefer to shoot with an optical or electronic viewfinder, the LX5 is again the only valid option of the two. These are of course big factors for choosing the Panasonic Lumix LX5 but as I am looking at them in terms of high image quality compacts, I will have to say that the Canon PowerShot is the winner for me.

I've been happy with Panasonic Lumix.

At least, for most models, they are still Made in Japan !

I love my Canon Ixus 120 IS. Sleek, very compact and handy, and easy to use. Takes very good pics even with my complete lack of photographic skills.

I told my gf to pick up the Canon S95 while she was in Chicago last week. She scored it at Wal-Mart for $350USD! Man, when I hear my friends in the US complain about how expensive things are I shake my head...they have no clue what the rest of the world has to spend!

                            /rant

Okay, so anyway, the camera is truly great. I'm the long time 5D guy with lots of lenses and the last time I used a point and shoot was a S45 several years ago. With this S95, I'm happy to say the build quality is solid. The photo quality is great. The low light capabilities are stellar for the size (although realistically I wouldn't go above ISO800), and the OPTIONS this camera has for a point and shoot are really, really nice.

F2.0 lens also is fantastic...you can easily get some lovely narrow DoF for portraits with this thing. I would recommend it if you like Canon and are used to the software.

I gotta say, I'm definitely enjoying the more 'hands-on' aspect of tweaking exposures etc to just how I like it on the ACIEL... no regrets whatsover, build quality is fantastic, and the store staff are constantly keeping me updated with what accessories come in, via call or sms (even when I'm not reachable in Tasmania).

Absolutely no regrets and I sold my Ixus 980IS in Aussieland today (hooray for strong AUD) to offset my purchase a little!

I've also been able to take some shots where the DoF Leica signature 'style' of image would be quite impossible on a Canon P&S. Have some true stunners from Bay of Fires, but since they mostly contain photos of family members, would not prefer to post them in public...

Is that in reference to the S90 / S95, or the G12? If so, do share, I'm intrigued.

Not an excuse. Have them take a picture of you, then post the pics here.
