  • I Love The Sound Of Idle Aircraft Engines

Is it just me being weird or something? I love the sound of idle aircraft engines. You know, the sound that people on the tarmac hear as the aircraft is readied for departure or as it arrives at the terminal. You always hear the faint whistle of it when you're in the aerobridge.

Just the other day, I saw the news on TV of our PM Lee arriving in Brunei. There was a scene where he was welcomed by the Sultan, right on the tarmac. It wasn't the sight of the two leaders which fascinated me , but rather the sound of the engine whistle and the sight of the beautiful Boeing 777 in the background!

Can't find the link now but I read this article about some guys who were producing a CD which consists entirely of airplane noises. Sounds like you might want to find that CD - you can then listen to the engines to your heart's content.

Personally I've never really noticed the sound of the engines while walking down the aerobridge - I'm definitely not the most observant person around though.
All opinions shared are my own, and are not necessarily those of my employer or any other organisation of which I'm affiliated to.

I do have some files from the Net of aircraft sounds. However, those are sounds of the aircraft during takeoff and landing, and sounds from inside the cabin. I haven't yet come across a file containing what I want.

I love the sound of the 777 engines when they're being spooled up for departure

There is something different about hearing the engine noise from seat 4F on the 744 during the boarding process . Of course, I don't get the chance often enough.

During the boarding process only under rare circumstances (e.g very short turnaround or inop APU AND inop ground power) will the engines be on, and even then it'll only be the no 3 and 4. Never 1 and 2.

Normally, that whine you hear is the APU - the engines should be off at the gate during the boarding process, windmilling

OK, so it's the APU. Actually all these while I'd been wondering if I was correct in associating the sound I hear with engines. Now I know better. I LOVE THE WHINE OF THE APU'S!!!

the sound of an engine winding down is a very noisy clanking sound that goes clank clank clank - but the sound of an engine spooling up during engine start is just beautiful music.....
