If that's the case, and they can't solve it, then they can get rid of the sales team, cancel T4, Runway 3 and the BT extension, as Changi cannot handle any more flights.

Of course it's pats on the back all around, up in the ivory tower.

SINGAPORE - Singapore Changi Airport broke new records in traffic numbers last year, thanks to buoyant travel demand in the Asia-Pacific region and continuing growth in long-haul traffic to Europe.

Changi handled a record 46.5 million passengers last year, a 10.7 per cent increase over 2010's 42 million. This came after a record 4.53 million passengers handled in December - the busiest month ever, with an 11.4 per cent rise year on year.

Changi's daily record was also broken on Dec 17, when 165,000 passengers passed through its gates during a 24-hour period, surpassing the previous record of 148,000 passengers on June 19, 2011.

Aircraft movements chalked a new record, too, at 302,000 compared to 263,563 a year earlier. There were 27,700 aircraft movements last month, an increase of 16 per cent compared to December 2010.

Meanwhile, airfreight movements recovered to 2008 levels, with 1.87 million tonnes of cargo handled, up 2.8 per cent from 1.81 million in 2010.

As at Jan 1, Changi Airport handled more than 6,300 scheduled flights each week, an increase of 16.7 per cent from a year ago. More than 100 airlines now connect Singapore to 210 cities in 60 countries globally.

There could be many reasons for the spate of recent delays at Changi. One of which was the preceding post stating the increase in aircraft traffic. Others include:The occasional closure of runways for maintenance and the sporadic changing of wind conditions in Changi and the associated inclement weather that comes along with it.

A few colleagues of mine also suspect the increasing number of relatively young, inexperienced fresh ATC controllers at the helm could also play a part in the delays, although I must add that this point is subjective. Another point which I felt could play a minor part in this delays is the increasing A380 traffic in WSSS. I do know for a fact that the A380 requires a greater lateral separation for takeoffs and landings due to wake vortexes. The "gaps" between aircraft is longer when an A380 is involved.

I had seen intersection runway takeoffs when FD first started flying to WSSS a number of times but strangely, they have stopped. As someone pointed out earlier, intersection takeoffs could shorten the takeoff queue although it isn't the fairest of systems.

CAAS is taking steps to alleviate this pressure and ironically, they are contributing to the delays we're getting although they are done for the best of reasons.

Prepare yourself for many delays or even a diversion as Singapore Airshow is coming to town in a month's time. Rehearsals would be held as early as 9th Feb, and you know what that means .

Passenger numbers at Heathrow over the last 12 months topped 68 million for the first time according to the airport's operator, BAA.
I'm probably missing something but given (presumablY) the same amount of airspace above the skies of LHR and SIN, how does LHR handle about 50% more pax than SIN ?

The air space doesn't belong to Singapore.

                Ask our air force

the number of whalejets taking off is still fairly low in numbers as during morning n even tillabt 1030am the "ground congestion" are mainly narrow body n widebody twin jets, and dont think its bec of "neighbors'" airspace too - as one who travel often can tell its alot of ground congestion n "slow tower clearance" for take-offs and even landings as been "stacked" doing circles as pilots would say "congestion at changi". Think our ATCs would be better managed through more courses or training in other airports like HKIA or even BKK where air traffic is much higher than Changi throughtout the day.

its not that changi really need a 3rd runway now or even another Terminal 4 - as one can easily see how under-utilised T2 is from the departure hall n all the empty rows of check-in counters and same with T3 from 10am onwards but contrast with T1 which is always crowded throughout the day.

the ATC delays at Changi must have been picked up by the media attention and likely from pax complaints and in today's ST's there's a 2-page article on the recent delays.

Changi rolls out new initiatives to tackle air traffic delays
Spike in number of flights, bad weather causing congestion

                          By Karamjit Kaur, Aviation Correspondent

Singapore's Changi Airport is rolling out new initiatives to make more efficient use of its runways, in the wake of a rising number of travellers experiencing delays in the air and on the tarmac.

While bad weather is sometimes the culprit, a significant spike in flight numbers in the past year is causing congestion in the air.

Changi delays are bad but nothing beats the experience I had day before yesterday in IST. STD 1045 pushback 1051. Take off 1237!

We were number 29 for departure. So much so we taxied out on one engine and captain said we were free to move about the cabin during the wait. They had the IFE on and several rounds of drinks..... Which made it bearable.

Reminds me of SQ118 a few weeks back. Managed to squeeze in one whole movie, an episode of the Simpsons, and a round of trivia.

All this while still on ground!
