  • To get to Reading, I usually use Paddington station, and just buy the tickets on the spot in the station. There are so many trains and services, you don't have to reserve seats, or even a specific train, just an open ticket.

    The rail network in the UK is quite easy to use. You can buy machines for domestic rail services which can be used on any service (either peak or off peak tickets) -- you don't have to select a specific timing, just the destination, and the signs in the station will tell you which is the next fastest train to the destination. An open ticket is fine.
