  • Process of redeeming star alliance award.

Can someone clarify to me the process of redeeming a *A award with KF?

I have done a few awards with BD- where you tell them the routing you want, feeding them details about each flight segment one by one, etc.

Does it work the same way with KF?

Eg, can I specify I want to go via OZ/ICN one way, and return via NH/NRT?

    Thanks.

from my recent experience, you need to do the booking/redeption manually by contacting kf number/sia office. there are some slight differences to the rules and regulations (no of stopovers, charges for change etc) and depending on agent's experience, different agents will have different interpretations (best to ask singapore-based).

you are not allowed to make different routings on the outbound and inbound flights. make sure you allow enough time for transit as NOT all star alliance flights will do follow-through luggage check (despite being on a single redemption ticket) due to airport requirements (including all Chinese hubs, PDG and PEK included) or other reasons.

Yes, you can make different routings for outbound and inbound. I have done SIN-ICN-LAX/SFO-NRT-SIN and included a stop-over in ICN.

As with BD, tell the KF person what flights you want. In fact, you can also add ICN-NRT or preferably GMP-HND to your itinerary.

        albert and 9V-JKL are right.

But beware of the max 6 segments and 1 en route stop over limitation. You can purchase another stopover for the price of 10000 miles, but not for the segments.
And one more thing, your open jaw route is allowed to be ended at different zone (origin or destination), but just the highest zone is counted for the miles calculation.

just to add, i've used my ticket halfway (outbound) and want to add a stopover on the way back and the agent offer me to pay by cash, around $250.

Hmmm.... That's new for me. Usually KF won't allowed you to change your itinerary once it's been used.
Especially with *A partner airlines. Because KF need to reissued the ticket if there any changes on the partner airlines flight.
Even a slightly 5 minutes change on arrival time. It happened many time with me.
Now knowing possibelity for changing with cash option.... It's new and give me hope.
May I know, which program did you use for redemption? KF or BD? And which airlines it is?

i was doing a KF redemption on whY on YVR-PDG-SIN-CGK (roundtrip) route on AC-SQ, having the ticket being issued by sq's CGK office. was planning to do NRT on the way return but was told i wasn't allowed to do that (CGK agents are pretty terrible on infos - i've got pretty frustrated with them). used my stopover at PDG already, i need to have an unplanned stopover at SIN on the way back. technicaly speaking it's supposed to be way cheaper than $250, even a roundtrip CGK-SIN for whY is around that price. i decided to just burn up my miles instead and issue a new one-way ticket on CGK-SIN instead.

                Thanks.

                Another question.

Does anyone know whether they allow routing from Hong Kong to Chicago via Europe?

once they let me had this route: SIN-JFK-SFO-MEX // MEX-FRA-NRT-SIN with stop over at NRT.

I think that should be ok, because it still in their limitation: crossing only one big pond, in your case, only the Atlantic.

The best you can do, call the KF call center, give them you specific route, and wait for their response.

Just clarifying - SQ call centre allowed both those routes?

Sorry for the confusion, I've got the ticket issued for this route: SIN-JFK-SFO-MEX-FRA-NRT-SIN

But after that, I change the ticket into: SIN-FRA-BOS-SJU-IAD-FRA-HKG, of course with some re issuance fee.
                      So... both routes were accepted.
