  • Unable to upgrade seats from Economy to Business.

As i've always flown Singapore Airlines from the UK to Manila, my wife and i have always redeemed any accumulated KrisFlyer miles to upgrade part of our leg from Economy to Business Class. So i booked two return flights for early next year last week, my wife phoned up KrisFlyer today to upgrade the Manila-Singapore leg and was told we couldn't upgrade due to the booking class our tickets fell under. How do these classes work? Ours is a W class.

    Rules have changed.

    For upgrades :
Only Economy Class tickets purchased on Singapore Airlines in S, Y, B or E booking classes are eligible for redemption of upgrades from Economy to Business.

It may be worth checking to see whether you can pay to upgrade your W class leg to one which is upgradeable and if so, how much ?

My wife was told if we bought the Flexi ticket we could've upgraded the seats but the ticket is over £150 more than the Flexi Saver ticket we bought. I will look into it more with Krisflyer tomorrow.

Don't know about W class but when I brought a N Class ticket and they do not allow upgrade to E or Y Class. But please still try asking SQ about it.

Singapore Airlines is defrauding people of their money by letting them buy flexible tickets so that they apparently can upgrade to business with their miles. When the time comes to it and you want to upgrade they say that you have booked in the wrong booking class even though it clearly stated that this ticket is upgradeable when you bought this as a flexible ticket. They then hide the booking class letter i.e. S or E and replace it with your cabin class Y or whatever you think is upgradeable on that journey. The difference being cabin class and booking class.
On none of the receipts, booking confirmations and seat reservations I have received it any indication of my "booking class". It always stated very clearly "Y Economy" which is upgradeable.
They've done it with me and have done it with many others and they carry on with their practices. I have reported them to the aviation authority and UK ombudsman and hope to help a few people to get their money back for false advertising.

Be aware of this when you you buy your tickets. All star alliance airlines are trying to entice customers to pay the most for less service. Not realising that this actually has a very bad public relations effect and people will think twice before ever flying with them again.

Have you tried pointing this out to SQ directly?

Interesting. All of my pending Y bookings e-tix receipts from the website are showing the booking class I book from.

They've done it with me and have do...
That is not correct. When you purchase the ticket, there is link that shows you the fare rules and the fare basis. The first letter of the fare basis usually indicates the booking class. If you see a Hxxxx, you will therefore know that the fare has a H booking class and that you cannot upgrade using this fare.

You have this option BEFORE you purchase the ticket.

One post, resurrecting a thread, a very clever name, and a rant... welcome to SQTalk, Sting-a-poor.

E-tickets show booking class: E,B,H,D,A etc
The itinerary sent to email after booking shows cabin class only (Y,F)

If one purchases tickets online, when you hover over the prices, they clearly indicate whether they are miles-earning or not, upgrade-able or not. Flexi savers earns miles, but not upgrade-able, flexi earns miles and upgradable.

I don't see how it can be made clearer during the booking process.

Thanks for the welcome Desert Traveller. You're right it is a rant and a furious one too.

You're right I had the option before I booked the ticket and I booked the ticket as a flexi ticket which a considerable amount more then the flexi saver for obvious reasons. I knew I can upgrade with this ticket hence I bought it.

SQueeze: "E-tickets show booking class: E,B,H,D,A etc

That is as easy as it should be. Even now when I go through the process of booking a ticket it gives you the options of a flexi saver and flexi. When I bought my tickets I bought the flexi tickets which should be upgradeable and it also showed the Y economy on eticket receipt but when I tried upgrading with my miles they said I was booked in S & E.

SilverChris: "Have you tried pointing this out to SQ directly?"
Yes, I raised it with SQ and they still insist that I was booked in S & E
I even asked them to send me their receipt of my ticket but to this day nothing yet. That tells me it is a balls up and somebody made a mistake and they don't want to admit to it. Instead they are disgruntling customers like me who are fortunate enough to have some spare time and resources to go public with this and eventually costing the Airline valuable answering time, money and public relations.

It could be all soo easy.

It could all be so easy...really easy. Did you try upgrading with SQ KrisFlyer miles or a different program?

Upgrades with KF miles from booking classes S, Y, B, or E are possible. See: Redeem KF miles on SQ & MI

*A upgrades with other programs are generally possible only from Y and B on SQ. Depends on the program though. LH M&M, for example, allows upgrades from S, Y, and B on SQ.

If you book the tickets online, it is clearly stated if you can accrue mileage, and if you can actually upgrade on them as well.

If GOD created me for only 1 reason. That reason would be to the love of my wife. If there was any other reasons involved, that would be for the love of Singapore Airlines

I tried upgrading with my Lufthansa Miles & More and they made me aware that apparently I was booked in the wrong class.

I still haven't received a copy of their version of eticket receipt for my flights in which they say that it says that I'm booked in S & E. They can't admit that they screwed up. Come on Singapore Airlines!
