  • Using KF status to help family

I've got two elderly unwell parents in Europe who are booked through a travel agent on tours and their flights back are with EK. Unsure how flexible their tickets are because it is all bound up in travel agent packaging.

If the worst case scenario happens and they just want to walk away from their whole package and be flown home and travel insurance won't play ball, they then may find it hard to find seats home with Europe all departing on holidays about now.

If I need to rescue them, can anyone advise if I can use Elite Gold status to call SQ and ask to gift my miles to them and have them priority waitlisted in any way?

My specialty is timetabling and flight schedules- ticketing isn't my area of knowledge so I thought I'd ask for a couple of tips from my friends on here.

Not sure if this answers or your question and you may have looked at it already:
If you have all the miles required for their flights home you could set them as your redemption nominees and book the tickets for them, if the seats are only on waitlist I'd give SQ a call and explain the situation to them.
The world's too large a place not to go wandering.

You can't gift miles but you can make them your nominees. This can be done online. Then waitlist them on the desired flights (also done online). Even though you are KF Gold, your parents are not accorded priority waitlist. Then you have to try your luck with Krisflyer service center to clear the waitlist.

Yup they will need to have a KrisFlyer account first and then you will need to add them as your redemption nominee. Unlike other airlines you can't use your miles for others other than your redemption nominee. SQ permits you to have up to 5 and they charge for editing / removing them if less than a certain period.

Once they are added to your redemption nominee you can start making bookings for them. Waitlist is another ball game as your status may not be applicable to them but since you are booking for them you can try to contact SQ for assistance. No gurranttees

Correct but it makes things a lot easier when nominating and also making a booking as you get to reference back from KF id.

Sorry then it should recommend to have them sign up for a KF account.

Anyway it's free and i do it'll make other bookings in the future easier

By the way for everyone's reference

Service fees for change of redemption nominee

              KrisFlyer 3,000 KrisFlyer miles / US$30 (Online) or 5,000 KrisFlyer miles / US$50 (Fax)

KrisFlyer Elite Silver 1,500 KrisFlyer miles / US$15 (Online) or 2,500 KrisFlyer miles / US$25 (Fax)

KrisFlyer Elite Gold, PPS Club and Solitaire PPS Club Free

              Terms and conditions

You can nominate a maximum of five redemption nominees at any one time. A child or infant nominee is the same as an adult nominee. A corporate or other legal entity cannot be your redemption nominee.

You can change or delete any or all of your redemption nominees for a flat fee per transaction. Once you've changed or deleted a redemption nominee, you can't make any further changes for six months. Adding of a redemption nominee is free, and can be done at any time.

If you've authorised any of your redemption nominees to make bookings and receive redemption tickets on behalf, for yourself or themselves, they must provide proof of identification. Once you've authorised a redemption nominee, Singapore Airlines will not be held liable for the issuance of redemption tickets to him/her.

For the collection of redemption tickets by a third party (including couriers, and non-authorised redemption nominees), a signed letter of authorisation from the principal KrisFlyer/PPS Club member and a copy of both sides of the principal member's membership card is required.

A different fee is charged for the change or deletion of redemption nominees offline.

              ----------------------------------------------

My take is that SIA does not want people to keep changing redemption nominees too often and uses this to control

                Thanks for the help everyone.

At least if we get to the point of me needing to book them I know I can add them as nominees for free due to Elite Gold. Thanks alian for all your suggestions in particular.

I'd doubt any of the flights would have any redemptions left as it's peak season at short notice LHR-MEL but perhaps if I book on their behalf and throw some of my miles at it, it might take the sting out of the price.

I'm going to see what I can do with their EK booking first, but the travel agent will probably be more of a hurdle than a help. Their insurers are insisting my father is not sick enough to abort his trip, despite a history of Guillain-Barré Syndrome and recurring pneumonia and my mother is slipping into dementia and cannot handle the situation emotionally. They never should have gone on this trip and booked it through a dreadful travel franchise without consulting me first, but they're my parents, so have to do what I can!
