I think several routes such as Male, Hanoi, Surabaya, Bengaluru there are significant connecting traffic for two daily services and perhaps to make connection more convenient for different routes. However putting two widebody frequency daily maybe too much for the O&D traffic and thus a mix of SQ and MI is pursued.
Some smaller routes with significant transfer traffic but with great competition from LCCs like Medan, Penang, a double daily or multiple daily MI service makes more sense.
