SIA cancels Bali flights to avoid volcano ash

    By Hannah Koh
SINGAPORE Airlines has cancelled Thursday's flights to the resort island of Bali to avoid dangerous ash spewing from an Indonesian volcano.
Flights to Bali scheduled for Friday will also be delayed, confirmed an SIA spokesperson in response to a query by The Straits Times.
AFP reported that several other airlines had also cancelled or diverted international flights to and from the island. Ash from rumbling Mount Bromo, a popular attraction in East Java province, had spread to the island popular with foreign tourists and surfers.
'We received information from Darwin that the ash from Bromo has reached 5,500m in the southeast direction and has affected some parts of Bali,' transport ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan told AFP.
'As a safety precaution, we've sent out an advisory to airlines to warn them about the ash situation so air crew can avoid the affected areas,' he added.
SIA customers may call the SIA contact centre at 6233-8888 if they have any questions. -- ST, AFP

The following flights have been delayed:

SQ 948, originally scheduled to depart Singapore at 1850hrs on 27 January 2011, is now scheduled to depart at 1030hrs on 28 January 2011 instead.

SQ 941, originally scheduled to depart Denpasar at 0915 hrs on 28 January 2011, is now scheduled to depart at 1410 hrs on 28 January 2011 instead.

SQ 948 will be operated by a larger aircraft to accommodate customers whose flight had been cancelled.

So will we see a 744 in Bali? Since it is the only possible "larger" aircraft as the 773s has almost the same number of seats as the 772 SR* series. Don't think SQ will send a A380, and don't think DPS can handle it.

Thanks mate... Safe and sound here.....no travel plan untill mid March...
No sign of any ashes here in SUB... Must be the wind is on our side this time...
Mt Bromo just has a "cough", no major eruption like Mt Merapi before...
Hope all will be back to normal in a couple of days....
