  • Cabin crew uniform Colour

Singapore Airlines has four different colors for the uniform of their cabin crew:

    Blue – "Flight Stewardess"

    Green – "Leading Stewardess"

    Red – "Chief Stewardess"

    Burgundy - "In-Flight Supervisor"

Is the red or the burgundy stewardess higher?
And what is the difference to the green stewardess?
    What are their different exercises?

    Blue - FSS/FS (Flight Stewardess)
    Green - LSS/LS (Leading Stewardess)
    Red - CSS/CS (Chief Stewardess)
Burgundy (or purple) - IFSS/IFS (In flight Supervisor)

The IFSS/IFS is the highest rank. IFSS/IFS/LSS/LS/CSS/CS are known as ranking crew, the FSS/FS are all classified as non ranking crew.

In each cabin, there has to be at least 1 ranking crew to oversee things & lead the team.

In premium cabins, naturally you will see more ranking crew as they are the more senior ones.

    Suites - 1 CSS/CS , 1 LS , 1 LSS
    First Class - 1 IFSS/IFS , 1 LS, 1 LSS
Business Class - At least 1 CSS/CS/LS/LSS & a few FSS/FS, the ranking crew here is determined by the type of aircraft, different aircrafts will have different ranking crew, e.g. the 747 will have 2 Chiefs, 1 on main deck & 1 on upper deck, the 777-300ER will have 1 Chief.

Naturally, ranking crew have more responsibilities than their non ranking counterparts.

In 2-class aircraft, the IFS will be in business while the Chief will be in economy, almost always at the front economy cabin serving the left aisle.

Then of course once in a while there is also "the man with a golden tie" or "the lady with a golden scarf". They are the auditors and sometimes some very young crews do get very nervous when they are on board despite they are always also very friendly.

Do they assign specific cabin crew members to stand next to the door to greet pax during the boarding process? I've noticed on my recent SQ flights that the majority of times, it would be a CSS or LSS who would be welcoming me aboard and glancing at my boarding pass while the FSS are walking up and down the aisle or in the galley doing last minute prep/checks.

Also, who is assigned to make the announcement after landing?
"Welcome to Singapore ladies and gentlemen, and to all Singaporeans and residents of Singapore, a warm welcome home... ... ...thank you for flying Singapore Airlines, a member of Star Alliance."

During the boarding process & greeting pax at the door, there is no clear cut rule on it, but yes, usually it is the leading or chief, the FSS have to work, to help stow baggage, present newspapers/magazines, or welcome drinks to Business class passengers.

Announcements wise, it is usually the LSS who is working in Suites or First Class, if in a 2 class aircraft, it is also the LSS (who either work in Economy or Business). All the ranking crew have a small little announcement booklet which they have to bring on every flight. Of course, but rare, we do hear male leading stewards who make announcements too.
