I need to go to Singapore in December from SFO (even LAX would be fine). My dates are flexible but I have to leave after the 9th and be back before the 28th. What is the cheapest way to get there?
Sorry, I forgot to mention, I have no miles. I've looked on booking sites and directly through CX and SQ websites. The cheapest I found was around US $1500 through SQ. I only ask because I know some members have much better information than I do.
If you book early enough, CX, BR and NW should have cheap enough fares coming. Speaking from experience from a colleague who came from SFO for a vacation last year.
China Eastern is about USD$1200 return via PVG departing 10th Dec returning 26th Dec, otherwise ANA has fares from SFO or LAX at USD$1571 return via NRT for most dates in December.
Cheapest way is to apply for a miles credit card with lots of bonus miles, then redeem those miles for a flight, though this only works if you have an SSN. Annual fee + taxes will be very very cheap, just a minor hit on your credit score and if the airline does not charge any fuel surcharge.
Thanks for the tips. Is BR Eva Air, and NW Northwest Airlines?
Also when you say low fares coming, do you mean they'll get cheaper soon than they are?
Edit:
I've read that if you book through certain airlines for travel on different airlines, you can avoid the fuel surcharge? Is there any truth to this?
Fares are generally lower further from the travel date if it ocrresponds with availaility within the differet fare buckets i.e. you could get a cheaper fare with restrcted conditions if you book early enough
I'm checking fares again (CX site, SQ site, vayama, kayak, etc...) and the cheapest I can find is around $2k. This is for departure around the 16th and return January 5th. Is 2k normal for this time of the year?
Prices are dependent on demand. Best to book soon, closer it gets to the ultra peak Christmas/New year holiday season the prices are just going to go up. Don't hold your breath for a sale or a drop in prices during the dates you want to travel.
