That depends on the capacity and CASM of the aircraft.

An improved WhaleJet might work for SIN-SFO/LAX nonstop if and when it has the range to operate the routes without adding fuel capacity because, while it's a challenge to sell so many tickets, the CASM is very low so the fares don't have to be so high.

An improved 777-300ER might work selling relatively fewer tickets at relatively higher prices. Ditto for an improved A350-900. When there are fewer tickets for sale, one can demand a higher price and so a smaller aircraft is viable with higher CASM.

      Sorry, but what's CASM?

Hahah I tried looking it up, but a bunch of other things came up, thanks though.

I thought there would've been an upgrade already to SIN via HKG given the amount of traffic and demand.

That's where you see the 77W and A388 on a 3.5 hour route... not to mention the retrofit of the 772s

                Doesn't this contradict that statement - http://www.flysfo.com/web/page/about...09/sf0904.html?

No mention of any runway reconfig being required.

Sorry for this question, but since only one 388 is coming in this December (9V-SKL), how would it be possible for SQ to replace the 744/77W of a long haul route?

First, SQ's WhaleJet fleet is now large enough that new route introductions do not have to coincide exactly with new aircraft deliveries because utilization can be pushed for a while. Second, no one at Airbus or SQ knows with certainty yet whether 9V-SKL will be delivered in December or January. Third, the next route to be introduced is a second daily service to SYD.
