  • SIA to fly to Haneda in 2010

SINGAPORE - SINGAPORE Airlines (SIA) said on Wednesday it would start a twice daily service between the city-state and Tokyo's Haneda airport from October 2010 onwards.

'The new flights will cater for growth in demand and boost travel between Singapore and Japan for both business and tourism,' SIA said in a statement.

SIA said it was granted the permit for 14 weekly flights to Haneda airport by Singapore's Air Traffic Rights Committee.

The carrier currently flies twice daily to Tokyo's other airport Narita. It also has services to other Japanese cities including Fukuoka, Nagoya and Osaka. -- AFP

Well done SQ, this is certainly a strange one.

I find it strange that this comes days after JQ/3K proposes its intentions to fly there. Was this route just approved by the authorities ? Why the sudden interest to fly there ?

Well done move SQ. Don't let 3K climb over your head.

IIRC, SQ had already signalled its intention on serving Haneda when latest the air bilateral was signed between Singapore and Japan. It allows up to 4x Daily flights to Haneda, not sure if this is just the Singapore side or for both SG and Japan combined.

I don't find them wanting to fly to HND strange. But I also find the timing of this, following Jetstars announcement yesterday, makes it look like they may have been caught on the hop a little.

SQ had actually announced this some time back. I vaguely remember seeing a thread on this. Probably Head Corp Comms took MC yesterday and 3Q decided to release to press on the same day?

I wouldn't read too much into this cat and mouse game.

I wonder if SQ will restart SQ632/631 via BKK to HND since it's on suspension.

Whilst I want it to, that's actually SIN-BKK-NRT, not SIN-BKK-HND... will they have to do a whole re-approval process again to either reinstate BKK-NRT or bring on BKK-HND..?

Whatever their motivations for starting a route to HND are - this would be a much more convenient option than NRT.

Then of course it depends on *what* part of Tokyo or the surrounding area you want /need to be in! And that the fares won't be cheap! (personally I think the Japanese government will limit the flights by foreign carriers to give JL and NH the leg up)

Press Release---> Singapore Airlines To Fly Twice-Daily To Tokyo Haneda

                        News Release

Singapore Airlines To Fly Twice-Daily To Tokyo Haneda

                        11 November 2009

Singapore Airlines will launch twice-daily flights between Singapore and Tokyo Haneda airport in October next year, complementing the current twice-daily Tokyo Narita services, one of which continues on to Los Angeles.

The Airline has been awarded the permit for 14 weekly flights to Tokyo Haneda by Singapore’s Air Traffic Rights Committee (ATRC).

Narita has been the main international airport serving Tokyo since 1978, but new international services will be permitted to and from Haneda after a fourth runway there opens for operations next year.

Flights to both airports will provide SIA’s customers with a choice of airport in Tokyo to suit their preference and convenience. Narita offers good connectivity with other international flights and accessibility by rail and road to other cities and prefectures outside the Tokyo metro area. On the other hand, Haneda has more domestic flight connections and is nearer Tokyo’s business districts.

The new flights will cater for growth in demand and boost travel between Singapore and Japan for both business and tourism.

In addition to Tokyo, SIA presently serves three other Japanese cities, namely Fukuoka (five times per week), Nagoya (daily) and Osaka (daily). The Airline also has extensive code share ties with Star Alliance partner All Nippon Airways on domestic sectors in Japan, as well as international flights between and beyond Japan and Singapore.

SIA launch Tokyo Haneda Oct 2010; possible A380 service

Singapore Airlines from October 2010 will launch 2 Daily Singapore – Tokyo Haneda service. The 2 Daily service will depart and arrive Tokyo Haneda between 2300 and 0600hrs. It will continue to maintain existing 2 Daily service to Tokyo Narita

Per report from Japan, SIA is currently studying feasibility of operating Airbus
                          A380 aircraft on this route.

I shall clarify my post. I meant restart SQ632/631 but send it to HND instead of NRT.

I had a look at the air rights agreement, seems like it only applies to SIN-HND with no stopovers. So I guess not.

I think capacity on the SIN-NRT route will be reduced if/when SIN-HND starts. Also, I think opening up HND is the government's plan in the long term to close down NRT and make HND into a full-fledged international airport again right?
