Singapore Airlines will increase its daily flight frequency to Colombo from next year to cater to the growing demand. Singapore Airlines flies five times a week to Colombo, Singapore Airlines General Manager-Sri Lanka, Melvin Ng told Daily News Business.

He succeeded Singapore Airlines, General Manager-Sri Lanka C. H. Chia. He said that Singapore Airlines felt the effect of the economic recession last year but since the situation is gradually improving, there is hope for improvement in the coming years.

Singapore Airlines in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourist Board organized a tourist program to promote in-bound tourism in Sri Lanka. Hence, familiarization trips were organized in Sri Lanka for the agents in China and Hongkong to increase the tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka, he said.

He said that there is an opportunity to promote the tourism sector in Sri Lanka if the peaceful condition is sustained.

There has been competition between Singapore Airlines and other competitors but it was a matter of product differentiation and the services to the customers. Singapore Airlines is unique in the products differentiation and the services. Hence the competition will not be an issue any more, he said.

The budget airlines is a different market segment but there is a group of consumers who pay a premium for differentiated products and services. In that sense, Singapore Airlines is a step forward than the other airlines, he said.

He said that Singapore Airlines needs to monitor the market closely and as a short-term plan it will have daily flights. (Reporter: Harshini Perera)
