  • Landing in a premium Cabin

    Your comments are appreciated.

I flew today SIN to Mumbai, in F class. I was alone during most of the trip. 30 minutes before landing, a female passenger came to sit in F for the last part of the flight. It is not the first time I see this.

Are the people "upgraded for landing" stewards/stewardesses? or frequent passengers of the airline?

I would be just curious to know.

    Thanks

I have not come across this situation before, but it could probably be due to some special reasons, for example,

    (1) pax suddenly felt very unwell and needs to be escorted out to the clinic upon arrival (did she look unwell?)

    (2) pax may be running late for her connecting flight in Mumbai, staff might arrange her to sit in front so as to have easier disembarkation later on

I couldn't think of any other reasons now.

The passenger could be a PPS or an unaccompanied minor. I was 'upgraded' in those situations before.

        1. Boss, mom, relatives, etc sat in the front cabin. FAs may offer to move you to sit nearer them so that you could disembark together.

        2. Friends of FAs?

          hi,

          To feb01mel:
The lady looked fine and not sick at all, she was taking pictures during landing..:-)
Connection wise, cannot guarantee but was first out of the plane and did not see her anywhere near me while walking/running out..So maybe...

          To SuperJonjon:
She might have been a minor. She was caucasian and looked around 18 years old...Not sure about PPS, but didn't look like it..
Can PPS request for such cabin change before landing? I had never hear of that..

          To phaleesy:
First scenario is not accurate, as I was sitting alone, and do not believe this was my daughter :-)
Friend of FAs ? Possible as well, but not very likely....

Could this be provided to the minor who ask for pilot cabin landing, instead?

My explanations were generic and not specific to this particular flight. You did state that this was not the first time you observed this.

I encountered the first scenario myself when my mom was sat in the front cabin. My brother and some friends encounter this when they travel in different classes from their bosses.

Second scenario does happen when you're extra nice to some FAs and are their buddies. Would never happen to me though.

I flew F several times but have never seen this happened before, including when I'm flying solo. Theoretically, this should not be allowed unless there is a medical emergency. It would have been unfair to a paying F class passenger who pay the full fare but another pax from a different class have access to the F cabin.

If I was sat in F and this had happened, I would not care. No skin off my nose. It's only the last 30 mins before landing. How much could the less premium passenger do to upset one's F experience?

It would have been a different ball game if someone was upgraded (for the whole flight) and upset the F cabin service because they were so demanding (more demanding than the paying passengers) and took too much of the FAs' time. Witnessed that. Not happy! (Not SQ BTW)

The FAs kindly offered to move me on two occasions, so that I could accompany my mum who is otherwise blur as a sotong. I did not take up the offer the second time because I was rather comfy in my Y seat and it was just too much hassle moving. FAs even offered to carry my luggage. Great service.

As for moving to the front to sit with their bosses, the individuals involved are PPS. Sat in J. Moved to F so that they could disembark quickly with their bosses.

Hmmm... perhaps this might upset some F passengers' pleasure in disembarking first.

There are many reasons for this: Pax has a tight connection at arrival or maybe an F pax has requested that the person in another COS be allowed so they can both disembark together. Could also well be an unaccompanied minor that crew want to keep their eyes on during the deplaning scrum.

In any case, never seen it happen for more than 20-30 minutes, so really, wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Any F pax who thinks his or her privacy is being invaded isn't really correct since by that time, the curtains are already open and people can peep through.

                    Hi,

I am absolutely fine with that...there is absolutely no impact to F experience whatsoever..
Just curious to see in what instances this can take place and whether any of you have seen this before...

New thing I encountered as well is that when you disembark in Mumbai , someone is waiting for you to escort you the customs fast lane. That was a nice surprise...

As most have chimed in here, I too have seen this happened many times.
Unaccompanied Minors are usually moved to F just prior to landing (perhaps for easy transfer to ground staff), passengers with tight connection are sometimes - understandably - accorded the treatment so they can run for their next flight, Y/J passenger traveling with their boss in F is sometimes moved to F (at Inflight Supervisor's discretion as I understand it) just as cabin service concludes prior to landing - to avoid too much 'stealing' of the exclusive F experience.

                      Doesn't bother me.

This has happened to me a few times on SQ - mainly for UMNRs so they get off quickly. Normally only happens if F class is not really full - in my case I was the only pax - was flying on the SQ A340-300 in 2000. It is also like a special 'treat' for them - I think it's kind of nice for the kids - you can tell they look really excited to be seated there for landing. It's a nice touch by SQ to do that for them.

And it's also as others have said for tight connections - I was in F on QF - they move some pax to F class but only after it had landed and was still taxing so they could get off quickly for a tight connection.

I agree with SQFG's and StarG's take that the exclusivity of the F experience isn't diminished.

I've been the beneficiary a couple of times - both unasked for on my part and both when I knew someone in F.

There was also a time an SQTer benefitted from me being in F (again unasked for), but that was more than just for landing (and it was an empty cabin).

I've been a beneficiary of this on a number of occasions, as I was dogsbody/staffer/minder/flunky to a then semi-VIP flying SQ. Said semi-VIP was also at least TPP if not LPP and this was back during those halcyon days which we ex-PPS and long-time PPS now gaze misty/dewy eyed through sepia-tinted mental photos...

Anyways, the usual arrangement would be one of the FAs would bring me from Y bulkhead seat to F when the seatbelt sign came on. As previous posters have pointed out, the only purpose in this particular instance was to allow the principal a quick debus from the plane and be spared the indignity of having to wait for her shieldbearer/spearcarrier to catch up. On those occasions if F was full, I just took my handcarry and bulldozed through to my principal when the aircraft came to a stop at the gate.
