  • Why no A330 diecast model?

Isn't SQ that 'proud' of its latest plane, the regional A330s? How come they haven't made any diecast model of the said type for KrisShop/ inflight sales. I know there is currently the "Airbus set" in 1:1000 scale but the A330 is just an obscure part of the set. Obscure because of the 'size' of the other item.

In contrast, they were selling A380 models well in advance of the first flight. Sales were stopped during the delay, but resumed both at KrisShop and inflight. The 77W model was offered as well and is still being sold today. IIRC, there have been three editions/ production runs for the A380 model in 1/500 scale and two or three for the 77W.

Not to mention, we've had the five Heritage sets that featured all but a few vintage planes (Comet, Constellation, etc). But the A330 is nowhere to be seen.

The A330 is only a temporary plane leased for 5-6 years, just to provide SQ with new planes so that they can phase out their 777s while waiting for the A350 and 787 to be delivered. Even in advertising SQ put out numerous ads for the 77W and A380 product, but I only recall one ad for the A330 SIN-BNE inaugural.
Much as I would like to see a real model in 1:500 I have doubts about one being made. There is, however a 1:400 version already out but it's not an official Krisshop version.

            Nice collection!

I wish they'd make some of those in 1/500. There's a whole market out there clamoring for the smaller ones.

By the way, what program did you use to print your ground foils?

SQTalker, did you buy all your models in Singapore?

I bought the Phoenix SQ 777W from The Orchard Store in Singapore late last year. The SQ A345 was available but I decided I could only afford one then. Went back last month, the A345 was still there but not in good condition. The man at the shop said the SQ A330 would be coming in. Stocks were slow in coming in because of the economic downturn.

If the A330 is available I will buy it now!

I have all the PHX models too, except 77W & 380 (sold out) =(

I hope to see 1:200 SQ B744, B772, A345, A330 models in the newest livery.
                Especially 1:200 SQ B744 before all de-commission.

                LOVE SQ!

There are many web sites that allow you to download the ground foils free of charge (google search them), you just have to locate the right scale, like mine was in 1:400.

I have some of the Phoenix models... it is such a pity that they don't do the tail logos well enough. Plus many of the models can't keep their nosegear on the ground (back-heavy).

Temporary or not, I really think it still deserves to be remembered in the 1/500 scale. I mean KrisShop could just cash in on the new aircraft.

They ought to look the way of CXcitement (Cathay Pacific) and WorldShop (or is it SkyShop by Lufthansa?). These two have been churning out models of their respective carriers every now and then, including those not operated anymore. And the collectors just keep buying as the registrations and model details are updated. For example, CX still sells A346 and 742 models and I believe they are quite popular. They even have two 744s, one with RR and the other with PW engines. The registrations for each production run get updated every now and then, too. They really know how to cash in on their image and market these to collectors. I mean how many CX fans out there just have to have every 744 version released?

I suppose KrisShop is still up there dreaming that the A330s will just fade in obscurity. And that "promoting" and cashing in on a temporary aircraft is bad publicity, or maybe even bad fen shui. Well, the fact that KrisShop's Heritage sets are still on sale years after the anniversary celebrations, versus the fact that CX's lineup are on their Nth production runs proves my point. Way to go CX!

I agree that CX does have a rather impressive model range. I got an AWC 744 from them last year, after the actual aircraft had already been repainted into normal CX colours. Unfortunately aircraft models doesn't seem like the thing KrisShop likes to cash on. It's actually pretty ridiculous to allow people to sell SQ models outside (and make money from it) and let everyone go for those when I'm sure many of us will readily go for the official airline versions. I hope someone from SQ is reading this thread.

How many unlicensed CX models have you seen? Very few, and mostly they are the old color planes which recently CX has gone into. This virtually stopped the counterfeits.

On the other hand, there are quite a few unlicensed models out there of TG and SQ. Precisely because there is demand, but the SQ and TG people are quite stubborn to give out licenses, or commission the production of models themselves. In other words, the likes of CX, JL and NH are smart enough to realize this and as a result they have their own lines (CX, NH) that collectors and fans buy directly. In other cases, they (LH, JL) have licensed a model manufacturer for general distribution. In cases where both modes of production are active, usually the airline version is much more expensive and detailed. Although in recent times, a model is either exclusive or generic. At any rate, all these airlines profit from all of these methods of production either through sales or licensing.

But maybe, as you say, KrisShop does not really see the $$$ coming in from models that the thousands of its fans want to buy. Rather, they see profit from selling the thousand-dollar recliner seats, pearl necklaces and wine chillers. Missed opportunity.

By the way, have you seen the most recent version of the CX 744 with PW engines? It has more imprints - updated decals and windowline! People over at the collectors' forums are raving about it. It is really impressive that these people at CX manage to sell the model to the same set of collectors twice, thrice or as many times as they re-edition the item. And don't forget that Lufthansa's 744 is on its what, 17th edition? KrisShop on the other hand cannot even get rid of the heritage sets.
