Singapore Airlines loses a quarter of its passengers

    Reuters

    June 17, 2009 07:40am

SINGAPORE Airlines continues to be hit by the global financial crisis with the carrier shedding a quarter of its passenger numbers during the past year.

The government-owned airline carried 1.2 million passengers in the 12 months up to May, compared with almost 1.6 million the year before, according to figures released by the airline.

Singapore's cargo division faired little better.

The amount of freight carried by Singapore Airlines Cargo fell 17.7 per cent to 90.7 million kilograms.

          What do you expect ?

First, the PPS restructure last year cost it some of its loyal followers to jump ship. Now with the economic downturn, pax are choosing to fly budget airlines and other cheaper alternatives to get to their destinations. Also, with the ASEAN wide open skies agreement, SQ has also lost quite a number of pax on the "domestic" front. Gone is the SIN-KUL cashcow.

Gone now is the SIN-PEN cashcow too. If budget carriers were to add even more flts to CGK, gone too will be CGK.

Right. No way does SQ carry only 1 million pax a year.

SQ carried 18.2 million pax for the financial year of 08-09.
And now we have one more new reason for the continuous downfall of pax load, the soon to come haze.

Don't forget the "HI-NI" Virus circulating around. There are now at least 126 cases in SIN. Heard from someone that the Cabin Crew are now using plastic gloves on Aussie flights..is that true?

Even if the daily A380 flights carried an average of 300 pax each trip, that itself is easily over a 1 million pax for the 365 days.

They were comparing the one month to the same month one year earlier. Reuters misquoted the source.
