As of today, the Business Class seats on the 747-400 are much more comfortable -- especially for sleeping -- than those on the 777-300. However, the 777-300s are due to be refitted with new seats soon (we don't exactly when) that will be slightly better than those of the 747-400. I would book the 747-400, especially if the trip is soon.
For an august trip to MEL in business class, I would choose either SQ217 on the 777-300ER or SQ227 on the 747-400, depending on schedule convenience. I would avoid SQ237 on the 777-300 if possible.

Completely agree on the 777-300ER if schedule permits (I would choose the this over anything else in J). OP requested feedback between 777-300 and 747-400 hence he/she would be better off on a 747 (maybe OP is using a *A redemption ticket at which point 777-300ER would not be an option).

On the MEL-SIN leg will be on the 777-300ER. Having not flown SQ J class before this will be a real high light.
Unfortunately my schedule coming back does not allow SQ 217 so looks like it will be SQ 227 on the 747. Last 747 in J class was with Cathay Pacific so will be interesting to compare.
