  • LHR-SIN-DPS Luggage and OLCI Question

Hello all, new here and have been reading many threads after searching but can't find an answer to something that's bugging me.

Flying SQ317 and connecting with SQ942 in Y next week. Unfortunately the flight was booked through a travel agent so I can't pre select my seat on the A380. I didn't realise this was the case until after I booked. I called SQ to ask if there was any chance they could assign me seats but was a non starter. Was advised to check in as soon as OLCI opens for the flights but there is obviously a difference between the times of this happening.

The agent at SQ recommended I OLCI for the SQ317 and then later OLCI for the SQ942 once that opens. However, would this create a problem with checking my baggage through to DPS? I would hate to have to collect it and then drop it off again at SIN. I did ask the telephone agent this but I don't think he knew what I was asking, his English wasn't too good.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I can't find the answer anywhere, even searching Singapore's website. Although I did find the sentence "Should you have connecting flights on Singapore Airlines, we highly recommend that you check in 48 hours prior to the departure of your connecting flight"

This is all so I can explore the remote opportunity of sitting in the upper deck in the two window seats. My travel agent has put a request in for this but I'm guessing this is just a wish list that'll never be satisfied on this sector.

    Sorry for the long post!

    Welcome to SQTalk, Hold Short.

You'll have no issues with your hold luggage being checked through, regardless of your OLCI decision. They'll be tagged when you show up at LHR, and that will ensure that they will follow you to DPS without you having to pick them up in SIN. They will also be able to issue your SIN-DPS BP at LHR, even if you don't OLCI for the SIN-DPS leg.

OLCI will be the surest way to secure seats, and you will have a chance to do that for your DPS flight while still in the UK because of the 48-hour period. In addition, you can also call SQ Reservations and ask for a window seat (that's as specific as they can guarantee, although you can probably request "on the Upper Deck if possible" or "as far forward as possible" on top of that, with no guarantee of the additional request being fulfilled). They've been relatively good at fulfilling "aisle vs. window" requests unless the flight is packed. This will also depend on how many passengers booked online and chose UD window seats when they did.

The other advantage of OLCI is that at LHR, you will have a queue separate from the other Y pax. That can save time if you reach the counter desk 2 hours or so before SQ317's departure.

Wow, thanks for a speedy response, I'll do the OLCI 48 hrs before each flight then.
What a great forum, an answer within minutes to a question that's taken me ages (and a phonecall) to try to resolve!

Actually, (and I don't remember this well) but doesn't OLCI open for all cross legs (continuation, not stops) at T-48 for the first one? You may be in luck for SQ942 at T-48 for SQ317 too.

Ah, I did wonder that, it would be the logical thing. I'll report back once I've checked in to provide an answer.

I seem to remember having to OLCI twice when I go to SE Asia, but then again, my senility is alarming these days. Or it might have something to do with the fact that I sometimes buy separate tickets because of the inane multi-city booking engine .

It would be great if you could confirm for us, Hold Short.

An update. I did OLCI 48 hours before the SQ317 flight, and this automatically counted the SQ942 as the same flight, so was one check in, and I could select seats for both flights. SQ flyergirl was correct in what she said

I also managed to grab the two seats together on the upper deck, 72H&K,

That's great news, Hold Short, and thanks for the update. Have a super trip to Bali.

Anyone have brochures for nursing homes in London? I might as well start looking now.
