  • Who sets the fuel surcharge?

    Hello all,

As a Hong Konger, our fuel surcharges is set and approved by the Civil Aviation Department, which are one way HK$61(S$12) for short-haul and HK$280(S$55.1) for long-haul (LINK HERE). I found that any flight from and to Hong Kong will charge at this rate, I wonder if both flight's destinations' government have different rates, how would the fuel surcharges to be determined? Is there any offical rate by the Singapore Government?

OK, back to something about SQ. I found that if you are traveling SQ1/2 from Singapore to San Francisco, the round trip fuel surcharges would be S$524, but if you divide them to two booking, that means SIN<-->HKG and HKG<-->SFO, the fuel surcharge would be S$24 + HK$560(S$110.2), which is S$234.2 only, of course you have to paid two more times HK Airport Tax HK$120(S$48) , that brings the total would be S$282.2. So if you buy 2 seperate tickets for the SIN-SFO, you can save about S$241.8 for the fuel surcharges.

Of course, I am just focus in the fuel surcharge and do not consider the other factors like different ticket prices and promotions like Sweet Deals and Flexi Saver.

Indeed, if you fly ex-HKG on SQ, you will enjoy the benefits that other airlines (like CX and KA) have in terms of reduction in fuel surcharges over the past few mths.

But SQ still charges its own fuel surcharges no matter what:

Take ICN-YVR for example. All in J/C full fare business class.. taxes are:

      1. KE - US$ 18.70 BP, 0.90 YQ

      2. AC - US$ 18.70 BP, No YQ

      3. SQ - US$ 18.70 BP, 110.00 YQ which is thehighest!

      Similarly on oneway from YVR-ICN

      1. AC charges US$ 98.10 , of which US$ 71.90 is YQ

      2. KE charges US $ 27.10 , of which just US$ 0.90 is YQ

      3. SQ charges US$ 136.20, of which again US$ 110.00 is the YQ

      ==================
Ok,now we want to see what the damage might be if we use economy and return from ICN to YVR:

      1. AC - cheapest return from ICN to YVR is around US$ 1003 fare with $44.90 taxes and fuel surcharges. No YQ !
      2. KE - cheapest published return fare is US$ 1054, with $ 46.70 taxes. $ 1.80 is YQ
      3. SQ - cheapest published return fare is US$ 1054, with $ 244.90 of which US$ 200 is YQ !

Fares may be lower thru special travel agents' fares etc, but the taxes and surcharges remain the same.

SO... looking at fares from ICN, is it rocket science why SQ is losing loads? All except to SQ management that is!

Congratulations to QANTAS today on reducing its INTL SURCHARGES by approx 40%. Well done! With zero surcharge on domestic and these new surcharges, looking a lot more reasonable.

SIA are reallllllllllly lagging behind now.
