Imagine both aircraft fly the same route and you have a free ticket - is the new J just a bit more comfy and contemporary, or would you go for the classic 747-nose experience?

I asked the same question before.
The majority of the answer was that F is F is F.

And now that I flew both, I agree that F on 744 is better than C on 77W.

F is F is F, if comparing SQ 744 F to SQ 77W J. Full stop.
Surely the only time you'd choose any SQ J over any SQ F is on a night flight where F equipment is 772/773 regional and J equipment is 77W/345/380? I do think that overnight flights on 772/773 regional is just cruel and unusual punishment.
On a day flight, I'm most likely to be concentrating on eating and drinking so I won't notice the appalling IFE and bad seatI bring my own IFE anyway - my laptop loaded with movies I need to catch up on... which means that on a free ticket, I will always choose F on a day flight.

So far, I seem to have very bad luck with 772/773 - all of those flights were non-AVOD.

Why do you say F- when on an award ticket? I have flown F in several airlines on paid/upgrade/redeem tickets and haven't seen any difference in service. I am not even sure the airline crew know if this is a revenue ticket or not?
