  • Stopover without a stopover

    Hi all,

Am flying from MNL-LHR on SQ919 then SQ308 in F redemption (upgrade from paid J class - v good J Class fare from MNL - LHR).

Currently i land in SIN at 2130 (ish) and my connecting flight to LHR is at 0905 the next day. My first question is; can i clear immigration and leave the airport for the night without any problems going back through immigration the following morning(i have residency/green card in SG if that makes any difference). I used to do this a few years ago when i used to go KUL - SIN - MNL and did a days business in SG - but not sure if rules have changed.

Secondly, do you think i would be able to get on an earlier flight from MNL by going on standby at the airport (F is never full on MNL-SIN so there will most lilkely be a seat available). Or would they just make me wait for the one i am scheduled on. It is a one way redemption booking so stopover is not allowed. If i am at the airport do you think they would be able to check me in regardless?

    Grateful for any comments.

    J

In answer to your first question, you should have no problems entering Singapore / clearing customs seeing as you have residency here. As long as that's still valid, should be fine.

You're also not 'stopping over' because you're in transit (sub-24 hrs).

For the second question, it's anyone's guess really - it may depend on the check-in agent but I don't think it is officially sanctioned.

I can think of one instance where I know a certain pax did ask for it and got the earlier flight. But that can hardly count as standard operating procedure. By the way, was it a 'saver' or 'standard' award? And since you can upgrade into F (not R), I doubt SQ will allow what is essentially an A380 R redemption.

No problem with going out of the airport at night and returning the next morning for your flight to LHR.

However, on standing by for the earlier flight: I am not so sure.
I booked my wife recently on one way SIN-CGK O class (First Class redemption).
She was booked on the 1730 flight and she arrived at the airport early and wanted to get on an earlier flight. They used to accommodate this easily with no problem.
On that day, the check in agent insisted that she needed to contact Krisflyer since it was a redemption booking.

If this rule applies consistently, it would probably mean having to lose the online redemption discount, paying the less than 24 hours change penalty, and so on.

As others have said, you can clear immigration, i.e. entering Singapore, and leaving the next morning.

The earlier flight from MNL to SIN will still put you less than 24 hours before your 9:05am the next morning from Singapore. This will not be considered as stop-over.
Depending on the check-in agent, most probably, first thing they will offer you is, yes, you can change to an earlier flight, because you are a paid J customer. Then they will work on the upgrade part. Again, even though it's an O-class booking, since yours is an upgrade from paid J, the agent might let you move your O booking to an earlier flight.
Another possibility is to call SQ, and ask whether O-class opens on the earlier flight. And just explain that you would like to move your MNL-SIN to an earlier one.
Lastly, the result depends on your C fares as well. I mean, sometimes there are fares that valid on specific flight numbers only.
