  • Which would you choose: SQ62 or SQ38?

Hello, I'm a fellow aviation fan from across the Tebrau I registered here because I liked reading through the threads but now I have a question.

This coming August, I have to fly to the US. I've done myself some research and SQ seems to be a very attractive option for me.

It has come down to two choices, SQ62 to IAH or SQ38 to LAX

Now, the prices for these two flights vary very little so it makes no difference. The connection to my next destination in the US is also not that important in this case.

    My question is:

Would you rather sit in the Y+ on the A340-500 but travel non-stop for about 18 hours

    or

Travel on normal Y on the 777-300ER but having a breather while at DME?

One more thing about taking SQ62 is that I have heard that loads in Y is very poor, so if I can have a whole row to myself, it would be my personal Y+++ Is this still the case or has the loads increased significantly?

And if I'm not mistaken the 77W has power outlets for laptops, is this also available for the A345?

Anyway, I hope you guys can give some suggestions or tips.

Btw, I'm loyal to MH but sometimes a marriage would need some spice

My vote is for Y+, mainly because it is not going to be around for much longer. 18 hours in Y+ is not painful and I'm a little sad that I won't get to experience it again on SIN-EWR.

Well I could assure you I couldn't care less about whether its going to stay for much longer or not

      No 'romance' involved here.

Analogously....... with my airline of choice going rather far and wide these days, that probably makes me the village bicycle! :o

        Oh, and welcome to SQTalk

          Sigh... romance is dead.

But I hear ya... still, for the same price, I think Y+ is more comfortable. With 77W being 3+3+3, I'm thinking, will Y+++ be that great? Got off MH90 yesterday and a number of people had a row of 5 to themselves, especially on the transatlantic leg. Now that might be the longest bed in the sky

Admittedly, romance isn't working out that great for me either. Trying make SQ my baby mama, but she probably doesn't even see me.

Hello and Welcome to SQTalk. How is Tebrau?? Unfortunately, my knowledge of that place is limited to AEON JUSCO.

I do hope you will be able to get connections to your locations either from IAH or LAX. It isn't like from Bandaraya to Tebrau.

In terms of whether to take SQ 62 or SQ 38, I would prefer the latter since Y+ will be history in time to come. Also, the 3-3-3 config on the 77W does not make a very comfortable bed. I'd prefer to have non-stop on the A345 in this case.

                A345:
                1) Shorter total flight time
                2) Leg rests available
                3) Much better seat pitch
                4) Much wider seats (although mitigated if you get an empty seat next to you on the 77W)

                77W
                1) Bigger TVs
                2) New Krisworld
                3) Possible 3-seater bed (load factor dependent)
                4) Newer jet
                5) No annoying entertainment boxes

                Anymore?

(I didn't factor in the lack of, or availability of, a stop, cos jani seems split on this)

I vote for Y+ too. Have alternated between both on my trips to usa and i certainly prefer the overall experience and comfort in Y+ then the 77W Y.
On a side note, 77W engines are much noisier then 345 from memory and I always felt that the 345 rides are much smoother.
Maybe i am just biased towards the A345

Would anyone here know factually how the loads are on these routes?

                    SIN-LAX and SIN-DME-IAH

I don't know about the LAX route but I've always read that the DME-IAH route is primarily a premium and cargo route.

i think you got them all right there

Hmm, I wonder what my opinion is...hmm i wish there was a picture that would show my opinion on this matter

Oh, wait there is, look left lol

Yeah seriously, I prefer Y+ to the new Y class...while the new Y class is nice, Y+, is Y+!! It was a great experience when i flew SQ21/SQ22 this past May; its a shame that will never happen again

One of the greatest things about Y+ on the flight back to the US, the 59.67 sec (approx) roll along the runway (as opposed to a 46 sec roll on the flight to Singapore; must have timed it incorrectly somehow)
I'm still waiting for my cookie as my first name is Kris

Long takeoff rolls are fun.. up to a point. I could have sworn I've had a much much longer one in an XO IL-86 departing URC one time.... high altitude, lousy performance........... = white knuckles

Oh man that sounds like fun!!

At least I knew what i was getting myself into (in that i had "warnings" based on other peoples experiences)

I really want to fly with Air Koryo, hopefully when i finally get to go to DPRK; I wonder if that will be a white-knuckled experience

                            SIN-LAX and SIN-DME-IAH

I don't know about SIN-LAX or SIN-DME but DME-IAH has been averaging less than 50% loads through April. I should find out the May loads in a week or two.

If I was flying SIA I would choose SQ62, but I'm biased since I'm from Texas. If you've never been to Russia flying SQ62 might prove a more exciting trip.

One thing to consider is the departure times of SQ38 and SQ62. SQ38 leaves SIN at 4:15pm while SQ62 departs at 2:15am. Arriving into LAX on SQ38 you'll get there at 5:35pm while arriving into Houston on SQ62 you'll get there at 1:50pm. Not sure if that matters since neither city will be your final destination.

The return flight is a wash. You'll depart LAX at 9:15pm or depart IAH at 5:50pm. Both flights arrive in SIN at pretty much the same time (5:45am and 5:35am).

If you are travelling with a companion and have yet to purchase your tickets, SIA announced a promo fare for SQ62. It'll cost S$1588 per person based on the "two-to-go" sale. Please click on the link for more info.

You can't go wrong with either flight. I'm sure whichever flight you choose you will be happy.

Yes, A340s are quieter than 777s.
