Downtown Check-In & New member

Hello everyone, I'm a new member here so please be gentle!

Basically my query is this:

We have a great escapade RTW ticket bought through Virgin, for July/August.

I'm just wondering whether anyone on here knows about or has experience of the downtoan check in with Singapore airlines, on Orchard Road in Singapore.

Basically we're flying on the A380 (SIN-SYD) and would really like to get some of the 'pair' window seats upstairs, we're thinking that using the downtown check-in 48 hours before is our best option.

However, the SQ website says that we will 'have to present baggage for acceptance' - does this mean that we would have to do without our suitcases once checked in?! Don't think we'll bother until the day of the flight if this is the case!

Also, I asked the customer services team at Virgin about online check-in for our VS flights and they said we can't do it because we have more than 4 sectors on the ticket and will have to check in normally at the airport, this is the same reason we can't look at seat maps etc on the Virgin website.

I had assumed that this would apply to all our flights with VS, SQ and Air NZ?

Hi James - I would do online checkin if its just seat selection you need - available 48 hours before the flight.

Downtown checkin means that you get your boarding pass (good if handluggage only), but still need to check-in your bags at the airport on the day of flight.

No you don't have to present your luggage at downtown office for check-in.
Just do your check-in there at the downtown office, get your boarding passes then check your bags in normally at the airport.
As matt_will_fix_it said, internet check in is another option.

interesting. I cannot do online checkin when I'm doing the SIN-SYD flight (ticketed on UA, thus no SQ online checkin on SQ for me) ... but checking in 48hrs before at Orchard would be perfect. Haven't been to SIN for some time now: the SQ office is still located in this fancy shopping mall opposite from the Meritus Mandarin right? IIRC it was called The Paragon or something ... I remember the days I just had to take the elevator down (when the SQ office was located inside the Meritus Mandarin) ... now I gotta cross the street

Paragon is quite allright...and you get to try some nice food - there that Japanese restaurant selling soba noodles and that chinese restaurant downstairs- cannot remember the name (Din Tai Fung?).

din tai fung is all over the place. a bit like wagamamas here. overrated imho.

Thank you for all your help guys! I think we'll try OLCI 48 hours before, and if that won't work we'll check in at Orchard Road in the following morning, because 48 hours before is at 20.30, after the office closes.

Looking forward to our flights on SQ, we are travelling HKG-SIN on a B777 (SQ857) and SIN-SYD on the A380 (i hope!) all in economy. From what I can gather, the service and seats on the A380 should be better than on the 777.

If OLCI is successful, make sure you grab the top seats.. Cozier and you share seat with your partner only
