  • Medical case on SQ322 this morning

Just arrived home, so much drama on the SQ322 this morning...with 4 more hours to go before landing into LHR, a passenger suddenly collapsed and medical help was sought immediately from fellow passengers. Initially, didn't look too good and captain was called to divert to nearest airport, but luckily 3 volunteers managed to stabilised the pax and a diversion was not required.

Also because of this, full breakfast service was not served, only cereal and buns were served.

Question though: if a diversion is required, can any airport other than the A380 ready airports receive the A380?

Oh dear, well at least the pax is OK but disappointing that you and your fellow passengers didn't get breakfast I imagine.

Frankfurt can definitely handle the A380 and I think most airports with sufficiently big taxiways and runways can if they just parked the A380 away from the terminal if the gate area isn't big enough.

Yeap, it was quite an unfortunate first A380 flight experience for me. Was looking forward to breakfast but when served with just cereal, fruits and a very cold bun, it did spoil the experience for me (was hungry). They had more than 2 hours when they served breakfast, and thought they had more than enough time to serve a full service.

The official explanation was that they had be on alert and prepared at all times in case the condition of the pax deteriorate and need to land immediately.

Am I detecting skepticism about the official explanation? It's not as though SQ cabin crew are known to be slackers.

I suspect the service protocol on an A380 might be a wee bit more involved than what you're used to on the 744. I think that's partly why additional training is required (the other reason being the different emergency procedures).

I'm happy to be corrected on that point.

and given sq's penny pinching ways of late i don't think they'll voluntarily waste an entire load worth of breakfast.

quik!, I am not implying anything. It's just a different viewpoint.

I had a medical case from LHR-SIN and we had to land in PEN. It must be very serious as we were so near to SIN..just another 30mins...It was very sad to see a almost-in-tears female board the aircraft in PEN and rushed back to her relative. PEN ground crew was not expecting us and after we landed, it took them a good 20mins to come onboard.

As far as breakfast was concerned, I ended up with only an orange juice. I did think to myself it was no big deal as I will soon be in SIN and will get food anyway. SQ ground crew also offered breakfast vouchers for those who wanted it. I just put things into perspective ~ someone life could have ended just like that.

I agree with jjpb3 since I too suspect a A380 meal service is more involved. Only had a rushed meal service on an A380.
