  • Best Y seats on A380?

Oh query - thought it most appropriate to tag it to this thread.

I'll be doing quite a few A380 runs in summer, and since SQ.com allows us to prebook seats, wanted to get advice re seating on the A380.

Seatguru doesn't highlight any fabulous seats, so i guess first hand opinions work. haha.

i'm thinking of upper deck 81 A/C/H/K or lower deck 54 A-K. i'm not a particularly keen sleeper on flights, but i'm a chronic hydrator (and consequently toilet visitor), so accesibility is impt to me. I'm also a bit on the lanky side (long legs) so inside seats don't really work well for me.

between the seats above, which are the best, or are there any better seats on the whalejet in Y?

    many thanks!

I think you've picked the best available.... but I'd certainly try for the Upper Deck..

We were in 76 H/K (IIRC) and they were good.. but 81 H/K looked marvellous.. far enough behind the actual door that there was NO intrusion into your space by the slide container... here's a pic.....

If you can't get those then the seats in Row 80 look good too... no window of course - this is the set in the middle of the a/c... but easy access/egress.....

thanks trooper! got 80G on both LHR and SYD legs.

just curious though. I managed to redeem an upgrade to 17H on a B747. A funny pop up window appeared and said that you have to pay extra for an extra legroom seat. is that really the case?

Congratulation for the upgrades... I've never heard about a surcharge for row 17 upper deck.

Upper Deck is definitely the way to go.
            - Much more intimate than the lower deck
            - 2-4-2 makes window seat actually bearable rather than having to inconvenience two people just to get to the aisle,
            - Meal service etc much quicker due to smaller cabin
            - Small storage cubby hole next to window seat
            - Much quicker when deplaning, as there are so few seats in upper deck compared to lower deck (especially if you're at the back of the main deck)

Thanks for the welcome! My travel plans for the future involve at least one annual trip to the US (recreational only)... and I intend going via Asia each time.... so SQ will no doubt feature!!

Last trip over was SYD-SIN-BKK-HKG-NRT-ICN-YVR-PDX-PHX... much more interesting than SYD-LAX-PHX or SYD-AKL-LAX etc..

Got to try a bunch of new (*A) airlines... TG, NH, OZ, AC and of course SQ.... NOW I can see why folks rave about the Asian airlines!

A little disapointed that the SYD-SIN A380 flights seem to have changed to overnights though.. it was a great day flight!

And of course MY 380 flight had only 190 pax... so you can imagine the comfort.. and service...

EDIT: I should also mention that SQ checkin in SYD provided/encouraged the use of ALL Star Gold benefits... (I'm *G through NZ).. and were extremely friendly to boot! What a great first impression that created.

I think SYD-SIN is still a day flight. I don't think there is an overnight flight from SYD to SIN.

Really? I hope so... not sure how I got the impression that had changed...

                  I must "away" and check!

                    From 5th May Onwards

                    SQ220 Economy Class (B747-400)
Sydney (SYD) 08:05 Singapore (SIN) 14:20

                    SQ232 Economy Class (B747-400)
Sydney (SYD) 11:30 Singapore (SIN) 17:45

                    SQ222 Economy Class (A380)
Sydney (SYD) 15:25 Singapore (SIN) 21:40

                    SQ234 Economy Class (B777-300ER)
Sydney (SYD) 17:35 Singapore (SIN) 23:50

                    ---------------------------------------------

interesting though. the A380 is currently operating SQ220. I did some sleuthing and found out that on the 5th of may, A380 will revert to operating SQ 222.

correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't this mean that SKD will join the LHR-SIN-SYD cycle, cos the switch back to the A380 operating SQ222 means that 2 aircraft are needed to operate the 221/222 cycle.

and bearing in mind A380 launches Narita on 20 may, SKE will have to be the aircraft that makes it possible to juggle all 3 A380 routes.

Oh well... My preference was for the SQ220 timings...

From my POV however I'd actually happily exchange an overnight in SIN in order to fly the Whale... which I'll have to do with a 2140 arrival!

I suppose I COULD investigate the SQ 747's..... but that's so "pedestrian"..

The best Y cabin on the A380 is definitely the upper deck. It's somewhat like a Premium Y cabin - When the FAs start clearing the trays on the UD, the FAs are still serving the last of the LD. Cabin feels more roomier too!

I like row 78, with no one behind me I get to recline my seat throughout.

Thats actually Row 79, but the recline should be limited as well due to the emergency exit row behind.
