Given recent incidents on other airlines, I guess it was inevitable given the risks of lithium ion batteries.
On a more positive note, at least phones, tablest and laptops (all of whom also have lithium ion batteries) are still allowed. Most SQ aircraft also have A/C power and USB charging, so it is less of an issue on SQ.
On Scoot, the A/C power is on chargeable basis, so this may cause some inconvenience.
