This is good news. For business trips Australia to Malaysia I never go SQ because we are not allowed F, which means we have to go SYD-SIN in J and then SIN-KUL in Y. Now we can go SYD-SIN-KUL all the way in J.
That is not quite correct. At the start of the online upgrade facility implementation, the system was admittedly buggy and it did not recognise the upgrade as you say, however a call to KF would have sorted it out. They would have done it offline for you and given you the 15% discount. You go Y-J on the longhaul leg, and Y-F on SIN-KUL.
The system was eventually sorted out sometime late last year, by which time you could do it online - and I have had upgrades processed both ways before.
You still get SKL J
Not as recent as last year - I remember trying to redeem it online, of course the system somehow didn't recognise that, showing no availability. A call to the call centre fixes this but again on the SIN-KUL leg, not Y-F. Argued my case saying that I have done it before but was shot down twice.
With all due respect, whilst you may have been shot down twice, i was successful 4 times (4 singles, not RT). The upgrade is most definitely a through upgrade, and you book into O class on the KUL-SIN-KUL sector.
Was RM488 one way, now RM460 (fare component only)
ex SIN was SGD 211, now SGD 200 one way.
So - not much of a difference.
Winners:
Pax travelling in through J bookings KUL-SIN-XXX whether paid or award
Price conscious pax cause it's a saving of SGD 22 or RM56 which is money in the pocket
Losers:
VS G runners
M&M members (or any frequent flyer program that credits huge amounts for F class because it is F class). As an example, on a one way journey ex KUL, i will lose 500 M&M miles for a RM28 saving.
Pax who wanted SKL F access
It's a bit of a bittersweet one this one.... IMHO.

Was the upgrade for the same KUL-SIN-LHR? Maybe Business class in the SIN-LHR is always packed?

If there's no inventory between SIN-LHR, the system can't process it anyhow, but yeah - just looked at my log again - KUL-SIN-somewhere or vice versa - an upgrade made with Krisflyer miles, from Y, gets I class on the longer sector, O class KUL-SIN-KUL.
Presumably you also won't be able to use the SQ/MH F special check-in areas anymore ?
When I purchased my SIN-KUL SQ F ticket for travel in May, it was ticket as a "First Class" ticket.
What would happen if I showed up for my flight and play "dumb" pretending that I didn't know SQ rebranded their front cabin as Business Class, and went to the F check-in area? Would they tell me to "go outside and line up at the C counter"?

It's unlikely they'll tell you go to the C counter. YMMV though

I doubt it, but to be honest check-in is so quick at Changi it makes little difference where you check-in.
Not that I presonally think it's worth it but you could also try for F lounge access. When I have been booked in F ex-BKK and they swapped to a 2 class they gave me a letter to show at the TG F lounge for access to their F lounge there.
