Not once in my many many trips to Australia have I been asked by customs at Arrival to take out my notebook (let along turn it on).

Agree. I suspect this is the case of child pornography. Otherwise, why would Australian customs crack down on pornography? There are lots of adult shops in all Australian cities and I don't see them being illegal at all.
