You can fly Air New Zealand HKG-BKK only on a RTW ticket. Sure it is a codeshare with TG but it cannot be booked with NZ. I tried to ring them up and book LHR-HKG-BKK but they said you could only book the codeshare flight if it was a RTW ticket.
    Summer holiday plans: Asia 09

I could be wrong but I think this may be the case of only being able to fly the TG codeshare BKK-HKG if you're connecting to/from HKG-AKL on NZ. If so, it has nothing to do with it being a RTW ticket.

It has nothing to do with RTW.

As far as I understand it relates to your previous flight which was NZ LHR-HKG. Then you can have it as codeshare NZ HKG-BKK the next leg.

Just like ICN-SFO on SQ and SQ codeshare SFO-YVR.

The only Star Alliance carrier In Spain (none in Italy) is Spanair but Spanair has no direct flight in between BCN & MXP, Star Alliance Time Table sugguests to take the LH routing via FRA. So I called the travel agent & SQ reservation directly & they both said you can fly SQ in between BCN & MXP if you are on a Star Alliance Round The World ticket...& better to be on Business or First Class since most of the Spanair & Lufthansa aircraft in these routes doesn't offer anything above Economy class...!
When there is no traffic rights between MXP-BCN, I believe even in RTW tix you are not allowed to take the flight. Perhaps a not so knowledgeable SQ agent or travel agent?

SQTalker was referring to BCN to MXP. If the RTW ticket did allow such a routing, I think this would be more likely to work as there is check-in open for the BCN - MXP - SIN flight.

Others have been referring to MXP to BCN. I think its very unlikely to be able to fly MXP - BCN... for starters there would be no check-in facilities open at Milan at the time required for this flight.

It's got nothing to do with check-in facilities and either it is possible or it isn't possible (rather than being likely to work). See:

              http://www.icao.int/icao/en/trivia/freedoms_air.htm

in particular, fifth freedom rights (which AFAIK don't exist here).

But when there is no traffic rights, how can they allow pax to board the plane?

What nonsense. You can fly NZ codeshare HKG-BKK as long as connecting from NZ LHR-HKG or AKL-HKG regardless of ticket type. This codeshare cannot be booked without the connecting NZ flight. But this situation is completely different to MXP-BCN vv as Air NZ has rights for LHR-BKK and AKL-BKK.
