  • Better value: SQ F or C class??

    My question is this:

Per dollar spent on SQ travel, which class is a better value, first or business?

Of course, for those with extensive resources, this question is somewhat irrelevant, but for those of us with rather limited resources I am wondering if there is a consensus regarding this subject.

This is not to suggest that SQ first class is not worth the money spent, but merely to raise the question of value, or flying experience received per dollar spent, in each of these two classes of air travel.

    Comments please.

As most of the regulars here will tell you:

    F is F is F.

But no, I'm not one of the fortunate ones to have tried that yet.

depends on the flight time and the aircraft type. If it's a long flight then F will always be better, a shorter flight you might not get all the benefits of your money in the time allotted, and avoid routes with regional business class like the plague

I know this is a bit OT, but Y is really the best value for money. On a long-haul flight, the price difference between F/J & Y is enormous. Most people prefer to sleep their way through the flight anyway, so the value is more on the flat bed. For the difference of, say, US$5,000, in ticket price, I'd rather use that money to recover from sitting in Y for 10-16 hours by staying at a grand hotel suite and dining at top restaurants for several days...

Now, back to the topic. On many airlines, C class has been improved to the point where it's just as good as F. On SQ's 77W, for instance, I've flown in all 3 classes, and F isn't much of an improvement over J. The J seat is already great for sleeping and is spacious enough. I actually prefer the J cabin to the small F cabin. What you don't get in J long-haul include: Ferragamo toiletry kit, slippers, Givenchy sleep suit, caviar (tiny portion for 77W), Krug/Dom, an extra soup course, extra 25% mileage, extra PPS value, access to a better lounge (only at some stations)...*

Figure out the cost of those items that matter to you and that you would actually take advantage of, and compare that to the price difference between a F & J ticket, and you can see for yourself if F is worth it.

*These are the more quantifiable benefits. Others, such as the prestige factor, more personalized service, more pampering are more intangible and for the ego.

On a 744, the F Suite is much better than the J Spacebed, so I'd put a premium on the actual seat itself in addition to the items I mentioned above.

I'd say Executive Economy on the 345 is really the best value for money.

if you were thinking about being a pps member, one way you could determine which is better is by dividing $25,000 SGD by the respctive first or business class fares for your most frequently traveled route. Then multiply each of these numbers by the respective mileage credit you will get for your preferred FF program for each class booking, to determine whether first or business will yield more miles. the one that yields the most miles for you, would be the better value.
            For example:
            C class = $2,500
            F class = $5,000
Route mileage: (one way) 3,000 miles; (rt) 6,000 miles
            FF program: M&M
C class requires 10 RT for PPS
F class requires 5 RT for PPS
            M&M C class = 200% mileage
            M&M F class = 300% mileage
C class travel will yield 120,000 miles
F class travel will yield 90,000 miles
In this instance, C class is the better value. However, everyone quantifies "value" differently. This is just one way you could make a distinction between the two. However, all things equal, F is the way to go.
