SQ reinstating FRA-JFK, HKG-SFO in Nov

Latest updates coming through on GDS seem to show resumption of SQ25/26 FRA/JFK extension and a new (flight number at least) SQ7/8 SIN-HKG-SFO routing from November.

Both using 4-class 777-300ER.

Also, wonder why did they start/reuse a new flight number pairing for SIN-HKG-SFO rather than keep/reuse/extend SQ1/2 SIN-HKG to SFO..? Could it be because of timings of the flgihts, as from memory SQ2 in an evening/overnight departure ex SIN and HKG?

And finally, can SQ carry pax all the way from SIN-JFK and SIN-SFO on those 2 flights, especially since their non-stop SIN-JFK and SIN-SFO flights have a lack on economy class as they are both operated by the A359ULR? Does anyone know..?

Yes the timings are almost completely opposite, and SQ1/2 flight numbers are technically still in use with their original timings - they're just running as cargo-only services SIN-HKG-SIN (mostly on B78X).

Yeah I did noted that re SQ1/2, hence I wondered why didn't they simply extend it and used that instead... But if the timings (maybe due to slot allocations) are different then perhaps it does warrant a new set of flight numbers.

SQ8 timing looks very good and reasonable. It looks identical to the SQ882 timing (SIN-HKG). HKG-SFO sector almost mimicks the CX870 flight that departs in the afternoon to SFO.

SQ7 timing almost mimicks CX's 879 flight, which reaches HKG by evening, but assuming in the future Singapore to India flights resume, a long layover may not sound convenient.

I wonder why they're not using SQ2/1 now.

Wasn't SQ8/7 also a former route that used to be SIN-HKG-LAS-HKG-SIN in the early 2000's with a 772ER?

I agree it’s a downgrade but consider this as an upgrade compared to pre-pandemic when the A380’s deployed to JFK had 2006 cabin products.

Besides the nonstop, JFK/FRA will be getting the 2013 First Class cabin products for the first time. If I recall, in 2013, temporarily JFK was operated with a 77W while SFO got the A380, well now both are 77W.

On another note, SQ25 and SQ23 depart 2 hours apart from JFK but they arrive in SIN more than 24 hours apart. SQ26 and SQ24 depart 1.5 hrs apart ex-SIN but arrive 5 hrs later to JFK.

No I think you’re mistaken. Both SQ23 & SQ25 is scheduled to arrive into SIN about 40 mins apart, ETA for SQ23 is 06:10, ETA for SQ25 is 06:50. Both flight arrives into SIN 2 days after departing JFK - all local times. Given SQ23 leaves approx 2 hours 15 mins after SQ25, this means the scheduled flight times for SQ23 is just under 3 hours less than SQ25. It can (quite often), be a lot shorter due to tailwinds etc for a flight of that block length.

So you were counting the layover in Frankfurt to be more than 22 hours. Right.

Agreed as much as I loved the a380. I really didn’t like the cabin again. It felt very dated. So yes the 777w would be an upgrade from a cabin experience but to me th a350 and the a380 are miles ahead and how the flight feels cabin pressure noise etc

Nota bene: SIA will not send any A380 with 2006 cabin products anywhere anymore. All retired and not coming back.

That would be a 2 years since the A380s have stopped flying. But it will still depends on the load factor of the service and if its still low, then doubt SQ will use the A380.

Pre-COVID, the challenge with aircraft deployment on SIN-FRA-JFK, as others have previously noted on SQTalk, is the uneven demand between the two sectors. SIN-FRA and FRA-SIN warrants deploying the A380 and fills the aircraft. FRA-JFK and JFK-FRA not so much. But who knows, the reverse may be true now, with pent up demand and lifting of restrictions between Europe and the US, while Singapore still does not allow tourists.
