      • Lufthansa was the first airline to order the 777X followed by Eithad and Cathay and SIA was the 8th customer to order then for 20 777X or 779. It would be likely the later part of 2025 when SIA receive its first 779 provided that it did not push back any deliveries. But with covid and even with the vaccine, air travel as predicted by many airline analysts and airline will not be back to pre covid levels for a good 2.5 to 3 years from now. For SIA do not think its an issue as it still can use its existing 77Ws to cover for the 3 years or so.

        • Boeing 779 EIS is pushed back another year to 2026. I wonder what this will mean for SQ, 779 in late 2026, early 2027? The reason attributes to not only the thrust link issues but also the Boeing strike too.

SQ’s current 77W SWA-SWT are approaching their 15 year mark, other than the A350’s that do not have First Class, does SQ have any other backup alternatives they can consider to replace their 77W? A350-1000 or even the Boeing 787-9?

          • It has been a long time since SQ launched a new long haul business or first class product. I think the current generation of 777 and A350 long haul J seats is showing it's age versus the competition. I've not tried SQ's 777 F before but I also think the hard product there could use a refresh as well.

I wonder if SQ is planning an interim refresh or introduction of new cabin products before the 777-9 launch. I understand that they were previously planning to launch new cabin products with the 777-9, and some frequent travellers on SQ may have had the invitation to preview the early seat prototypes (under strict non disclosure) as long as a few years ago.

Given the long lead times, I wonder how competitive these new J and F products will be when they are finally launched, given how much seat designs have evolved in recent years.

            • Well I realise this is just one instance, but a close friend of mine has reached a phase of her life where she can afford to fly J on her holidays to Europe. She tried SQ last month and was very excited in the lead up. Her appraisal of the cabin staff, the food, and the overall experience as absolutely amazing.

She’s going back to EK for her next trip because she hated sleeping on an angle in SQ’s J seat. It’s one anecdote but it can’t be the only one. SQ can’t afford to be hurt on the Kangaroo Route and we are always told that J is where the airlines make their money.

My parents felt a stark contrast compared to the last couple of trips we flew Emirates last month when they took SQ. The crew were great on all the legs (that has not changed). It is the seat & aisles, service and also food that has gone downhill. However they did give real curd, something Emirates should consider. The last time I took a long haul trip was March and this time I guess part of me was glad to stay back.

They said there was a time SQ exceeded in everything possible. Now besides the cabin crew’s friendly demeanor, there’s nothing good about SQ these days anymore. If you think that’s not enough, they also stopped automatically putting amenity kits for long flights at your seat. No toothbrush or paste unless requested. Even Emirates puts amenity kits for long flights. The good days of SQ are gone.

My dad flew Premium Economy in 2022 & he said at the time food was about the same as Y class but the seat was slightly better.

The only reason they took SQ was due to the $800 fare (my dad shelled out his miles & paid $430). Consequently a religious family friend just went to India for Navarathri on SQ (but flew from LAX on SJD, MAA on MBM).

Next year if there is not a major significant price difference I would do EK. Even their 77W cabin though a bit tight is miles better than SQ. Food is also much better, A380 is also great too.

Coming back to the point of this thread, I would expect SQ to possibly free up the 77W on the fifth freedom routes like SQ12/11/26/25. It won’t be a significant downgrade but F is lost if an A359. IAH is being freed up in the Spring. I hope SQ can consider some interim options, like when they leased the A330, could they consider leasing some 789 aircraft or A35K perhaps?
